Farmers in Loi Thuan commune get rich from commercial cricket farming model

The model of "Raising crickets" is not new, but raising crickets to develop the economy and earn high income is still something few people can do.

In 2013, Mr. Tran An Vinh's family (born in 1967), a farmer member of Thuan Tay Hamlet Association, Loi Thuan Commune, boldly learned and from a tray of cricket eggs, tried raising them: after 10 years of implementing the "Commercial cricket farming" model, Mr. Vinh's family had a stable source of income.

Total revenue from each sale of commercial crickets; providing cricket egg trays, food; purchasing commercial crickets;…. after deducting expenses, Mr. Vinh's family earns about 70 million VND/month.

The fate of raising crickets came from the fact that Mr. Vinh's family really liked to eat fried crickets. He always asked his wife to go to the market early to have the opportunity to buy field crickets to eat.

After his wife went to the market many times and there were no more crickets to buy, he realized the high market demand for commercial crickets, so he thought about raising crickets. He went to cricket farms in Long An province to learn the techniques and bought a tray of cricket eggs to raise.

With a tray of cricket eggs, after 35 days of raising, Mr. Vinh harvested 3 kg of meat crickets and had 3 more trays of eggs.

From the process of raising crickets, Mr. Vinh gained experience and was guided by the Farmers' Association of Loi Thuan commune (Ben Cau district, Tay Ninh province) to borrow capital from the Ben Cau district Social Policy Bank in the amount of 40 million VND, from the program "Production and business in difficult areas".

Mr. Vinh expanded the area and renovated the cricket farm, increasing the cages to increase the herd. From the initial success, he instructed the farmer members on farming techniques and established a Cricket Farming Cooperative with Mr. Vinh as the Group Leader (with 13 members) and has been operating effectively until now.

He has now developed 30 cricket cages, each cage is 2 meters wide, 3 meters long, and 0.5 meters high; on average, he exports about 1.5 tons of commercial crickets per month.

In addition, he also equipped 2 light trucks to purchase commercial crickets from farmer members in Ben Cau, Go Dau, Trang Bang districts with a quantity of 15 tons/month to supply to the market in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Dong Nai, ...

The commercial cricket farming model of Mr. Tran An Vinh, a farmer of the Farmers' Association of Thuan Tay Hamlet, Loi Thuan Commune, Ben Cau District (Tay Ninh Province) brings high income. Cricket farming is a low-cost model, with good profits, quick harvest, and easy capital turnover.

Mr. Tran An Vinh said: “When I first started raising crickets, I was very worried, but after doing it, I realized that cricket farming techniques are very simple, low investment capital, few diseases, do not require a large area, and harvest time is fast. When you buy eggs, they hatch in about 7-8 days, and when they hatch, you take care of them.

Crickets are very easy to raise, they only need a cool place to live; their main food is chick bran and all kinds of leaves, vegetables, and grass that can be used as food for livestock and poultry, such as elephant grass, banana stems, cassava leaves... Use a spray bottle to spray water for crickets to drink.

Farmers only need to raise crickets for about 30-35 days to have meat crickets to sell, and raise them for 40-45 days to be able to harvest eggs.

When we hear the chirping of crickets, it is the stage where crickets lay eggs. The trays of soil and sand are sprayed with mist to create moisture, which is a nest for crickets to lay eggs. When we harvest crickets, we also clean the cages and collect cricket droppings to use as fertilizer for plants, contributing to soil improvement."

Currently, Mr. Vinh's cricket farming model has a stable output, suitable for households with small land area, does not require a lot of labor, and can take advantage of idle time to increase income.

In particular, due to their adaptation to summer weather, during hot weather when crops and livestock have difficulty growing, crickets still grow well and achieve high productivity.

This is a livestock farming model that creates a source of food with high nutritional value, is environmentally friendly, and brings economic efficiency to people, so it needs to be applied, learned, and replicated.

Mr. Le Van Trong - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Loi Thuan Commune (Ben Cau District, Tay Ninh Province) said: "Mr. Vinh is an exemplary member, a pioneer in socio-economic development in the commune, especially in cricket farming; in addition to developing the family economy, he is also very enthusiastic in participating in the Association's activities and local emulation movements, especially the new rural construction movement.

Over the years, he has been honored to receive awards from all levels and sectors in many fields and his family is a good farmer-business household at the district level and a typical farmer association of the commune.
