The road is waiting to collapse!

QTO - The concrete road connecting Bac Son village 3, Tuyen Lam commune, through 4 villages of Tuyen Son commune, is a vital traffic route connecting 2 mountainous communes. However, after nearly 20 years of use, this road has been degraded. In particular, the Mu E culvert area has recently suffered serious landslides, with the potential risk of collapse at any time.

The inter-commune road from Bac Son village 3 to Tuyen Son commune is 2.4km long, with a 3m wide concrete road surface and a nearly 20cm thick roadbed, built with funding from Program 135. After storm No. 10 at the end of September 2025, accompanied by prolonged heavy rain, the water in Mu E stream rose high and flowed rapidly, causing serious landslides at Mu E culvert. The roadbed at the culvert location was washed away by water, creating a deep hole right under the road surface.

According to observations, the landslide has eaten into the road nearly 2m deep, below is a hollow space nearly 5m deep due to dozens of blocks of soil and rock being washed away by the water, leaving a large gap like a "giant frog's mouth". From a distance, the road looks intact, but just a heavy rain or a heavy vehicle passing by can cause the road surface to collapse at any time.

Ms. Vo Thi Tho, a resident of Bac Son village 3, living near Mu E culvert, said: “On the night of September 28, 2025, there was a prolonged heavy rain, the stream water rose high and flowed rapidly, causing the soil and rocks around the culvert to collapse and be swept away. When I took out my flashlight to look, I saw a very dangerous gap below the road. I was worried that the road would collapse and endanger passersby, so I cut tree branches to fence it off.”

Immediately after the Mu E culvert landslide incident, which put the road at risk of collapse, the local government set up solid barriers on the road, posted signs warning of the dangerous area, and banned cars from passing to ensure safety. However, hundreds of people, students, and rudimentary vehicles still brave the danger through this road every day to save time.

Bac Son village 3 currently has 205 households with 874 people. On the other side, the villages of Tuyen Son commune also have hundreds of households regularly going to school, going to work, transporting agricultural products and acacia wood on this route. Since the Mu E culvert collapsed, heavy vehicles have been forced to go around the bypass, extending it by about 8km, causing many difficulties and costs. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, in village 3, Tuyen Son commune said: "Every day, I and many people go back and forth on this road to go to the market, pick up children, and go to work. Knowing it is dangerous, I still go through, otherwise I have to go around a very long distance."

Not only affecting daily life, the landslide at Mu E culvert also hindered the production and transportation of forest products of the people. “Since Mu E culvert collapsed, the road has been closed to cars, so I can no longer buy acacia wood. Now, people who want to buy or sell acacia wood have to go around by another route, which takes more time and money,” said Dinh Tien Toi, a resident of Tuyen Lam commune.

In addition to the serious landslide at Mu E culvert, the road from Tuyen Lam commune to Tuyen Son commune also has many landslides on the negative slope, creating large and small caves underneath. The road surface also appears to be peeling and cracking due to long-term use, natural disasters and the impact of heavy trucks. Vice Chairman of Tuyen Lam Commune People's Committee Tran Nhan Son said: "When Mu E culvert had not yet collapsed, the local government reported and petitioned higher authorities for support to repair and upgrade, but so far the repair has not been implemented due to lack of funds. Currently, the Commune People's Committee continues to submit a report to higher authorities to request funding for repair."

Faced with the above situation, the people of Tuyen Lam and Tuyen Son communes hope that the authorities and sectors will soon pay attention and allocate funds to fix the problem at Mu E culvert as well as the entire road. Reinforcing and repairing the road will not only ensure traffic safety but also contribute to stabilizing the lives and developing the socio -economy of these two mountainous communes. If not handled promptly, the road section through Mu E culvert can collapse, endangering people at any time, especially when the rainy and stormy season is still complicated.
