On the morning of April 10, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the People's Committee of Tra Cu district to organize a ceremony to announce the Decision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) to include the Ca Hom mat making craft of the Khmer people in the South of Ham Tan commune, Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

At the ceremony, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Thach Boi said: Mat weaving is one of the long-standing traditional occupations of the Khmer people in the South of Tra Vinh province. Despite many ups and downs, Ca Hom Mat Weaving Village still plays a good role in creating jobs for rural workers and preserving the unique traditional culture of the locality.

In order to continue to do a good job of preserving and promoting the values ​​of traditional cultural heritage of ethnic groups in the province, in 2023, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism directed the Provincial General Museum to research, collect documents, and build a scientific dossier on the Ca Hom mat making profession of the Khmer people in the South of Ham Tan commune, Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province to submit to the People's Committee of Tra Vinh province for consideration and submission to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for inclusion in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

On August 9, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 2321/QD-BVHTTDL, including the Ca Hom mat making craft of the Khmer people in Ham Tan commune, Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien acknowledged and praised the efforts of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the people of Ca Hom Mat Weaving Village in preserving and promoting the values ​​of cultural heritage. At the same time, he requested all levels and sectors, especially the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Khmer people of Ham Tan commune to strengthen propaganda work, raise people's awareness of the meaning and importance of the values ​​of cultural heritage in general and the Ca Hom Mat Making Craft of the Khmer people of Ham Tan commune in particular. Continue to preserve and promote the values ​​of heritage; deploy activities and propose conservation solutions to effectively exploit the heritage.

In addition, it is necessary to link the development of the Khmer mat-making village of Ca Hom with local tourism development programs to make this place a tourist attraction, helping visitors to explore and experience. Continue to research and organize traditional vocational training classes, develop a team of skilled workers as the core of the development of the craft village, and at the same time appropriately apply modern technologies and techniques to serve production to improve product quality...

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to continue researching, consulting and selecting typical intangible cultural heritages of the province to compile scientific dossiers to submit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for consideration to include in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritages in the coming time.

On this occasion, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism awarded certificates of merit to 4 individuals who have made many contributions to the Ca Hom mat making profession of the Khmer people in Ham Tan commune, Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province.

It is known that the Ca Hom mat making craft of the Khmer people in Ham Tan commune, Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province is a traditional craft that has long been associated with the life of the Khmer people. The Ca Hom mat weaving craft village has about 91 households that are practicing the heritage and passing it on to the next generations. Every year, the craft village brings to the market more than 32,800 mat products of all kinds and they are widely consumed in localities, neighboring provinces such as Soc Trang, Vinh Long and a few to Cambodia.

With quality products supplied to the market, Ca Hom mat making has contributed to creating jobs, increasing income, improving the lives of Khmer people in the area; contributing to shifting the economic structure in rural areas, creating opportunities for service activities and promoting local socio-economic development...

Up to now, the province has 8 national intangible cultural heritages including: Southern amateur music art; Cham Rieng Cha Pay art; My Long sea worship festival; Ok-Om-Bok festival; Robam art of the Khmer people in Tra Vinh province; Vu Lan Thang Hoi festival of Cau Ke district; Dom Long Neak Ta festival of the Khmer people in Tra Vinh province; Ca Hom mat making craft of the Khmer people in Ham Tan commune, Tra Cu district. Notably, Southern amateur music art has also been recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
