(CLO) The exhibition “Underground Circuit” shows surprises from the grinding effects between paint layers; the appearance and disappearance, improvisation, creating interesting and attractive effects.
On December 7, artist Cong Quoc Thang will bring to viewers 36 traditional lacquer works in the exhibition "Underground".
Sticking with lacquer material, each artist pursues a main creative theme. In the process of learning about traditional lacquer material with young names, we come across Cong Quoc Thang.
The exhibition "Underground Circuit" takes place at Hanoi Aqua Central from December 7 to 14, 2024
“Playing” with lacquer, the artist acts as a storyteller, taking us from childhood to mature contemplations with heritage concepts. The material and the intangible, the culture and the fine art painting entities contained within it have somehow become a path to evoke nostalgia through the artist’s authentic reproduction. Very spontaneous, pure and also very original.
Cong Quoc Thang is passionate about traditional materials as well as folk cultural symbols, following childhood memories with images of lion dances, water puppetry or Champa cultural symbols. He visualized those symbols according to his artistic sense and created a series of works with strong traditional colors.
In Cong Quoc Thang's paintings, the cultural exchange between generations from children to farmers, enjoying spiritual entertainment or long-standing symbols appears very clearly.
Shennong (traditional lacquer, 100 cm x 120 cm)
According to Cong Quoc Thang, the finished lacquer material has a splendid, luxurious beauty, but when it is done, it is very rustic and simple. It seems to have similarities between Vietnamese folk cultural symbols originating from religious beliefs, forms of entertainment, long-standing festivals or the tradition of rice civilization that has lasted for thousands of years. When creating, he follows the flow of ideas and colors that appear when grinding, without imposing a certain way on the painting from the beginning. That improvisation makes the painting very light and very open.
Cong Quoc Thang shared that with this exhibition, he found surprises from the grinding effect between the layers of paint; the appearance and disappearance, improvisation, creating interesting and attractive effects, not just in the display of lacquer techniques.
In abstract works, freedom and liberty are more clearly expressed, giving viewers new, mysterious and mystical experiences, requiring them to think in many different ways to interpret a painting.
The Dream of the First Prize Winner (traditional lacquer, 80 cm x 120 cm)
The “undercurrent” faintly intertwines the past and present, with a cultural exchange between generations. With skillful brushwork combined with smooth lacquer techniques, the use of subtle and warm colors is very “intense”, the lines create a rustic and charming space, along with the vibration and depth in the stroke technique, Cong Quoc Thang leads the viewer far away and then gets lost between the real and fake worlds to bring about emotional sublimation.
Through his works, Cong Quoc Thang also believes in preserving the nation's unique folk culture and bringing the breath of the times to life in his works.
The exhibition "Underground Circuit" takes place at Hanoi Aqua Central (44 Yen Phu, Hanoi ) from December 7 to 14, 2024.
