At around 8:00 a.m. on November 8, a Traffic Police Team of 5 officers from Team 7, Road and Railway Traffic Control Patrol Department (Traffic Police Department), used a car with license plate 80A-042.07 (driven by Major Nguyen Ngoc Chau), to patrol the Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway.

According to the Traffic Police Department, when the working group arrived at km76+400 in Phu Nhuan commune (Cai Lay district, Tien Giang province), they discovered a damaged car with license plate 60K-246.76 parked in lane 2 of Trung Luong - My Thuan expressway, posing a risk of causing traffic collisions for other vehicles traveling on the route. The working group stopped the car to check and provide warning support to car 60K-246.76.

The Traffic Police Department said that while stopping the specialized car 80A-042.07, the traffic police team turned on the priority lights and arranged for a traffic police officer to direct traffic. However, while carrying out the task, an ambulance with license plate 65A-183.78, driven by Nguyen Van Han (born in 1997, from Soc Trang ), crashed into the rear of the working group's car.

The collision left one person in the ambulance slightly injured; the traffic police's special car and the ambulance were damaged.
"The ambulance driver initially admitted that he was sleepy and not paying attention. A quick alcohol and drug test on the ambulance driver showed negative results and no alcohol was detected," the Traffic Police Department informed.
In response to some information on the internet that the accident occurred because the traffic police stopped the car to handle violations on the highway, the Traffic Police Department affirmed that this information is false. The traffic police stopped the specialized car to help another car (which was broken down) to check and provide warning support to avoid causing danger to other vehicles.
