Editorial: They are talented artists with their own personalities, always persistent in their pursuit of their careers, and above all, they are women with the will to overcome adversity and challenge fate to protect their own happiness, whether they choose to be a single mother or the wife of a famous director. VietNamNet introduces a series of articles about female artists who live a private life, quietly making art to assert themselves.

Then melody enters the soul

Born and raised in Thai Nguyen , Hoang Quyen was soon imbued with the quintessence of Tay ethnic culture. The first sounds that entered her soul were Then melodies from her elders in mass art performances.

"When I was a child, I often listened to Then singing from older aunts and uncles in mass art programs in Thai Nguyen. I was strangely attracted and absorbed in the melody and the way people sang the Then melody of the Tay people," she shared with VietNamNet.

The images of her childhood are still vivid in the singer's memory. "Once I listened to an old artist practicing a program and forgot about lunch time. Then dance easily makes listeners fascinated and absorbed in it," she said.

Unlike many artists from the highlands, Hoang Quyen's journey to pursue music did not encounter many difficulties. "I am very lucky not to encounter obstacles, on the contrary, I have many advantages. I am not too meticulous in expressing my voice, I have Tay melodies in my soul, I have the image of the mountains and forests that are always mysteriously beautiful in my memory and I am like a wild flower in my own musical realm," the female singer confided.

What is special about Hoang Quyen is her perspective on development in her artistic journey.

"I don't think there is a change in me, it's a realization. I always realize more every day when I sing, write, think... It's not a moment but a journey in silence," she shared.

Single mother and her journey of rebirth through music

Few people know that Hoang Quyen is currently a single mother. However, she has never considered this a burden but instead finds inspiration and joy in everyday moments with her daughter.

She often balances her music career and childcare naturally. "I usually do things naturally. There are times when I write and my child is chattering around me, it seems like everyone is enjoying a wonderful moment. There are also times when I need to concentrate, I will arrange to write after my child sleeps," she shared.

Hoang Quyen's daughter seems to understand the importance of her mother's work. "Every time I go to record, she understands that it is a 'big' job. She will be good to her grandparents so that her mother can work," the singer said with obvious joy.

From a pure singer, Hoang Quyen gradually expanded into the field of songwriting - a transition that she considers natural and inevitable. "From a performing singer to someone who writes and sings her own story is a door that opens the world for me. Everything comes naturally and I have written more, made more music than at any time before. I don't find it challenging, I just feel more passionate," she said.

It is in silence that Hoang Quyen finds inspiration and clarity for her artistic path. "I always observe myself in silence, holding on to the moments of recognition and understanding. It is at that moment that I have the opportunity to understand myself and write about the real world that I perceive," she confided.

A separate path in Vietnamese music

In an era where young music often pursues vibrant, catchy melodies, Hoang Quyen remains steadfast in her quiet, poetic style. "Because silence allows me to listen to the germination, the magical inspirations, to write, to live with the doors opening in life," she explains.

She also believes that the most important element in songwriting is not melody or lyrics, but sincerity. "Sincerity will bring us closer together when a narrator begins with their sincerity. With a song that begins with sincerity, it will have the simplest and most gentle sounds," she asserts.

A special point in Hoang Quyen's music making is the combination of traditional and modern elements. "I especially like works that are imbued with traditional culture. There are many ways to express rich traditional culture in music. I really like using traditional tones and melodies in my compositions, it makes people sing naturally and traditional melodies live in the lyrics and music of the new generation," she shared.

Hoang Quyen sets an ambitious goal of having more than 40 albums in the coming years, to express her years of living with music. She chooses to paint her own musical picture - maybe not vibrant, noisy but rich, deep and full of emotions, like the Then melodies that nourish the soul.
