On January 30, in Da Lat City, Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee held a workshop on general planning orientation for Da Lat City and surrounding areas until 2045.

Previously, according to Decision No. 257/QD-TTg dated March 17, 2023, the Prime Minister approved the task of adjusting the overall master plan of Da Lat City and its vicinity until 2045. Accordingly, the vicinity is defined as the entire administrative boundary of Da Lat City and the districts of Lac Duong, Don Duong, Duc Trong and part of Lam Ha District (including Nam Ban Town and the communes of Me Linh, Dong Thanh, Gia Lam, Nam Ha) with a total natural area of about 335,930 hectares, 9 times larger than the current Da Lat City.
In particular, Duc Trong District is identified as one of the strategic satellites, sharing many functions with Da Lat. Therefore, the planning process will be linked to the roadmap to convert Duc Trong District into a town in the future.
Building green, modern, international-class urban areas
Opening the workshop, Mr. Tran Ngoc Chinh, Chairman of the Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association, said that this planning, in addition to decompressing, solves current and future problems of Da Lat. The main roadmap of the planning will build Da Lat into a green city under central authority.

According to Dr. Architect Tran Thi Lan Anh (Vietnam Urban Development Planning Association), the general planning of Da Lat must ensure inheritance in accordance with the plans still in effect, continue to effectively exploit natural conditions and typical ecosystems to develop into a modern city; preserve and develop Da Lat in terms of architecture, culture, history, etc., build Da Lat into a tourist, cultural, scientific city with a green, attractive and modern identity, of international class.
Dr. Architect Nguyen Ngoc Binh (former Deputy Director of the Government Office) said: "Building Da Lat into a sustainable urban area, becoming a heritage urban area is an inevitable trend. It is necessary to study and expand urban space according to the principle of harmonious and friendly development between economic, social and environmental protection aspects". According to Mr. Binh, Da Lat needs to protect and promote 3 core values including: climate, natural landscape and heritage fund of ancient and valuable architectural works.

At the workshop, experts, scientists and planners shared their knowledge and experience in urban planning and development, focusing on issues such as land use planning, urban planning, infrastructure planning; sustainable green space protection... for socio-economic development, healing nature to minimize risks and adapt to climate change.

Speaking at the workshop, architect Ngo Viet Nam Son expressed his opinion that in order to develop in the right direction of a green urban area and a heritage urban area, Da Lat needs to expand its development space to preserve and embellish the existing urban core area. According to Mr. Son, if Xuan Huong Lake is taken as the center, it is possible to develop to the east. There, we will create new spaces, prime land, creating opportunities for new development flows. Creating new spaces is meaningful in accelerating development but does not cause disruption in the existing urban core area of Da Lat.

Architect Ngo Viet Nam Son suggested that it is necessary to expand development space to preserve and embellish the existing urban core area.
According to architect Ngo Viet Nam Son, it is necessary to orient the future strategy for Duc Trong. What our ancestors did for Da Lat, we must do for Duc Trong like that. We need to reserve 50% of green space and water surface so that in the future Duc Trong must be a green and modern urban area.
Mr. Pham S, Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee emphasized that Lam Dong province highly appreciates listening to the opinions of experts at the workshop and the social community. The opinions and recommendations of experts will be considered by the province to organize the upcoming planning work, which will be a scientific basis for choosing the direction of urban development for Da Lat city in the future commensurate with its inherent potential and strengths.
