On the afternoon of June 16, at the Government Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son received Australian Ambassador Gillian Bird on the occasion of the Ambassador's beginning his term of office in Vietnam.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated Ambassador Gillian Bird's experience and positivity, believing that the Ambassador will contribute to further deepening the Vietnam - Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Expressing his delight at the extensive and effective development of the bilateral relationship, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that Australia is one of Vietnam's important partners in the region with high political trust and a shared vision on many issues.
In the context that Vietnam is determined to implement the "Quad Strategy" on reform, streamlining the apparatus, developing science and technology and digital transformation, developing the private economy, and enhancing international integration, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his hope that Australia will continue to accompany and cooperate substantially, contributing to helping Vietnam realize its set goals.
The Deputy Prime Minister asked Ambassador Gillian Bird to actively coordinate and maintain the development momentum of bilateral relations in the coming time, especially maintaining the exchange of delegations at all levels, channels and localities of the two countries; periodically review the progress of implementing high-level commitments and agreements, including the Action Plan to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the 2024-2027 period.
The Deputy Prime Minister also highly appreciated the effectiveness of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of defense and security, especially cooperation in the field of United Nations peacekeeping; and suggested that the two sides further strengthen cooperation in preventing transnational crimes and building population management data.

Emphasizing the importance of the Vietnam-Australia Economic Cooperation Enhancement Strategy, the Deputy Prime Minister suggested that both sides increase market opening and effectively promote free trade agreements to which both countries are members in order to soon bring two-way trade turnover to the target of 20 billion USD, as well as contribute to maintaining a rules-based free trade system and ensuring supply chains.
The Deputy Prime Minister appreciated Australia's support for Vietnam in responding to climate change, and asked Australia to continue supporting Vietnam's energy transition process, towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
The Deputy Prime Minister also asked Australia to continue facilitating Vietnamese students to study and conduct research in Australia, contributing to enhancing people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
Ambassador Gillian Bird expressed her honor to accept the assignment in the context of the two countries' relationship being in a very good period of development, with bilateral cooperation having strong and effective developments, evenly in all fields.
The Ambassador conveyed the regards of Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son; sincerely thanked the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for their attention and support for the relationship between the two countries in general and for the Ambassador and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam in particular.
Appreciating Vietnam's determination in implementing strategic breakthroughs, the Ambassador affirmed that Australia is always ready to support and accompany Vietnam, emphasizing that Vietnam's success is also Australia's success.
The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam has always been a reliable partner of Australia, emphasizing that Australia values Vietnam's role in the region and wishes to strengthen and build an even stronger partnership with Vietnam.
On the regional and international front, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam highly appreciates Australia's role, contributions and commitments to the Southeast Asian region, including the East Sea issue; and encourages Australia to cooperate more closely with the Mekong Sub-region countries, for the sustainable development of the Sub-region.
The two sides agreed on an approach that upholds and complies with international law, thereby jointly contributing to peace, stability, and cooperation in the region and the world; emphasizing the need to turn high-level commitments into concrete projects and cooperative actions in practice.
On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his hope that Australian leaders would accept the invitation to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi in October 2025./.
