List of potential male candidates for the 2025 Golden Ball awards ceremony

Champions League winners PSG dominate the men's shortlist for football's most prestigious award. As many as nine players from PSG's treble-winning squad have been nominated for this year's men's Ballon d'Or, along with coach Luis Enrique, as France Football released its list of nominees.

Ousmane Dembele (PSG and France national team)

Ousmane Dembele (PSG and France national team)

Ousmane Dembele (PSG and France national team)

Ousmane Dembele was the best player on the best team last season. Normally, achieving both of these criteria would be enough to warrant a gilded Ballon d'Or with your name engraved on it.

Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Dembele's hidden talent was clear, but a lack of consistency meant the 28-year-old never - until now - made the 30-man shortlist for the award.

Luis Enrique has unwittingly unlocked those talents by pushing Dembele into the No. 9 role, where his dynamic, tricky movement, mesmerizing dribbling and sharp finishing have made him the perfect spearhead for a talented PSG squad.

Kylian Mbappé, whose departure has facilitated this tactical change, has no hesitation in speaking about the possibility of his teammate winning the top prize: "If it were up to me, I would bring it to his house."

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona and Spain national team)

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona and Spain national team)

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona and Spain national team)

On paper, Dembele's consistent excellence makes him a worthy winner - but for those who value individual achievement over team achievement, Lamine Yamal probably wins.

Yamal's 30 goal contributions in La Liga and the Champions League are certainly outstanding, but what really stands out is how he accumulates them, saving his best performances for the moments when the whole football world is focused on them.

Yamal has had two sensational performances in El Clasico in La Liga, scoring in both games, but it was his performances against Inter in the Champions League semi-final that really got everyone talking.

Yamal's goal in the first leg epitomized everything that makes a world-class player: balance and the ability to accelerate past defenders, finishing with a wicked curling shot into the far corner.

Yamal has maintained that momentum into the new season, starting in blistering form with two goals and an assist in La Liga, plus three more for Spain on FIFA Day.

Vitinha (PSG and Portugal national team)

Vitinha (PSG and Portugal national team)

Vitinha (PSG and Portugal national team)

Aside from the attacking flair, it was the excellence of the midfield that formed the backbone of PSG’s Champions League triumph. At the heart of it was Vitinha, whose ability to create from the deepest midfield position provided a classy bridge for the team’s intricate movements to flow. Despite being the deepest of PSG’s midfield trio, Vitinha was not only there to dictate the tempo but was also given license to move further forward and create.

This was evident in the biggest game of all: the Champions League final. Vitinha’s penetrating pass from the left edge of the box was key to unlocking Inter’s defence for the opener. His assist for the third goal highlighted the blend of guile and energy that makes him indispensable to PSG at the moment.

The 25-year-old then ended his year with a prominent role in Portugal's Nations League triumph.

Raphinha (Barcelona and Brazil national team)

Raphinha (Barcelona and Brazil national team)

Raphinha (Barcelona and Brazil national team)

As the top scorer in the Champions League (13 goals, level with Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy), and La Liga's Player of the Season, Raphinha is clearly a strong contender for all the awards.

Operating mainly on the right flank of Barcelona's attack, Raphinha contributed 34 goals and 22 assists in all competitions to lead his club to a domestic treble. In Europe, Raphinha did all he could, producing astonishing performances even when Barcelona ultimately fell short.

The 28-year-old superstar possesses all the traits of a fine footballer - the tricky dribbles, the extraordinary bursts of energy - and combines them with a relentless work ethic.

"Raphinha always starts to press. The dynamism he brings to the team is invaluable," head coach Hansi Flick told Barca One, the club's streaming platform, last season.

Raphinha is the perfect modern striker, one who combines individual skill with selfless dedication to the team.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool and Egypt national team)

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool and Egypt national team)

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool and Egypt national team)

Even by Salah’s high standards, the 2024/25 season has been outstanding. The Egyptian has been involved in 47 goals, more than any other player across Europe’s top five leagues. Salah’s consistency is remarkable: no one else in those leagues has had at least 10 goals and assists in the last four seasons.

Yet despite this relentless quality, a Ballon d’Or-shaped hole remains in Salah’s overflowing trophy cabinet. Time is running out for the 33-year-old to fill it. Salah’s repeated rejections are a reflection of the fickle dynamics that often govern who wins the award.

With so much importance placed on success in the Champions League, results can depend on the single moments that knockout football brings, as when Liverpool were eliminated in the round of 16 on penalties by PSG.

That could see Salah miss out on the Ballon d'Or once again. But Salah, who travelled hours a day just to get to training as a youngster, is not one to give up. As head coach Arne Slot said last season: "He will try to work harder next season."

List of potential female candidates for the 2025 Golden Ball awards ceremony

In the women's category, five English players have been nominated for the women's Ballon d'Or after winning the EURO 2025 championship, including Hannah Hampton, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly and Leah Williamson. Marta, who returned from retirement to lead Brazil to the Copa America title at the age of 39, is also nominated. Here, we analyze the three most prominent names.

Alessia Russo (Arsenal and England)

Alessia Russo (Arsenal and England)

Alessia Russo (Arsenal and England)

Alessia Russo was the centre of attack for both club and country last season, making her mark with goals, assists and being a key attacking fulcrum.

She leads Arsenal's scoring charts in both the WSL (12 goals) and Champions League (7 goals). At EURO 2025, only Putellas (7) has more assists than Russo (5).

Russo had more touches in the box than any other player in the WSL last season (163) and no player had more direct shots (64), which shows just how good a penalty box player she is.

With her good coordination and effectiveness in the air, she provided Arsenal and England with a perfect target for two teams who like to cross into the box. Only Rachel Daly (18) and Khadija Shaw (17) attempted more headers than Russo last season (16) in the WSL, while she scored a brilliant headed goal in the EURO final against Spain.

The 26-year-old has won European honours with both club and country and looks poised to break into the top three this year.

Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona and Spain national team)

Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona and Spain national team)

Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona and Spain national team)

Aitana Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, has the chance to make it three in a row in 2025.

Bonmatí once again shone on the biggest stages, helping Barcelona reach the Champions League final and playing a key role in Spain's journey to the EURO 2025 final two months later.

Her influence on her teams' possession play is absolute. As part of Barcelona's front three, Bonmatí is responsible for linking play, creating chances and contributing to the team's high pressing.

She finished the domestic season with 18 goal contributions (12 goals and 6 assists), marking her third consecutive season with 15+ goal contributions. She also created the most chances in Liga F (69), including the most from open play (67), while no midfielder had more touches in the opposition penalty area (178).

Bonmatí also leads the league in secondary chances created (58) and secondary assists (12) – passes before a teammate shoots or scores – showing her influence in building up to a shot. Further evidence is provided by the fact that no player was involved in more attacks that ended in a shot from open play than Bonmatí in Spain’s top flight last season (235).

Combine that with impressive performances in big games and Bonmatí makes a strong case for a third consecutive Ballon d'Or award.

Marta (Orlando Pride and Brazil national team)

Marta (Orlando Pride and Brazil national team)

Marta (Orlando Pride and Brazil national team)

Marta has had a dream year for both club and country. The 37-year-old helped Orlando Pride win their first NWSL title and returned to lead Brazil to their ninth Copa América Femenina title.

Only Chelsea's Claudia Martinez and Mayra Ramírez (7 each) have had more goal contributions than Marta's six at Copa 2025. In the final, she came off the bench to score two goals, including a late equaliser to force extra time.

No player has been involved in more attacking sequences that ended in goals from open play in the tournament than Marta (6), proving that she continues to be as decisive in games as she was when she burst onto the scene 20 years ago.

In the NWSL, only Temwa Chawinga (20), Barbara Banda (13) and Sophia Wilson (12) have more goals than Marta’s nine, and her finishing is red hot for both club and country. She scored three goals from an expected goals (xG) of 1.3 at Copa América and outperformed her xG by three goals for the Pride, the biggest overachievement last season in the NWSL.

The six-time FIFA Women's World Player of the Year is still competing with the best players of the current generation.
