Corridor connecting the sea and the mountains

Connecting and synchronizing transportation infrastructure is a key requirement for Da Nang city in the coming period. This will create a connecting corridor for the city's comprehensive and sustainable development, from the coast to the mountains.

Blockage point in interregional blood vessels.

It took us about two hours to travel from Tuy Loan area (Hoa Vang commune) to the center of Dong Giang commune via National Highway 14G. The driver, despite being familiar with the route, drove cautiously. Because the infrastructure along the entire route is not yet fully connected, some sections were smooth while others were bumpy. And because the road is narrow, only reaching the standards of a Class IV road with two lanes and a cross-section of 7.5m, or even just 5m in some sections, a large truck could easily occupy half a lane.

The deterioration of National Highway 14G – a vital transportation artery connecting the center of Da Nang city with the western part of the city bordering the Ho Chi Minh Highway – was previously recognized by the Quang Nam provincial government as a "bottleneck" in inter-regional socio -economic development.

Mr. Do Huu Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Kon commune, said: "We have always hoped that National Highway 14G would be upgraded. When that happens, the road from Doc Kien to the Prao area (now Dong Giang commune) will be much more convenient for the trade of goods."

One day, I accompanied the Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Giang Commune, Coor Le, to visit several garden-forest economic models in the commune. Here, we saw models of household economies, group households, garden economies, farm economies… which had already been implemented since Resolution 35/2021/NQ-HĐND of the People's Council of Quang Nam Province (formerly). Some cases have escaped poverty, such as the case of Mr. BNướch Ngang (A Duông residential group) with his efforts in raising spotted deer and cultivating purple ginseng…

According to Mr. Coor Le, the commune has a poverty rate of 31.3%, equivalent to 797 households, and it is estimated to decrease to 24.7% (a reduction of 167 households) by the end of 2025. Developing garden-forest economic models is one of the immediate directions for Dong Giang commune to achieve sustainable poverty alleviation. That's the current situation; the future is a story of... transportation infrastructure.

The leader of Dong Giang commune shared: “In the mountainous area, many products grown and produced by the people need buyers and a market. In the long run, to escape poverty sustainably, the city needs to upgrade transportation routes. Then, trade and commerce will be stronger. If transportation is too long and difficult, it will be hard to find markets for the products…”

Expectations for these routes to be given a new look.

Last August, at the 2nd Session (Special Session) of the 10th term, 2021-2026, the City People's Council approved a Resolution on the zoning plan for a tourism area along National Highway 14G in the western ecological zone, at a scale of 1/2,000, covering an area of approximately 339 hectares. This area will include a high-quality resort and service complex, an expanded area and a new planned area northeast of National Highway 14G; and a community-based ecotourism area combining outdoor activities and experiences…

In particular, National Highway 14G will be upgraded to a 42.5m wide cross-section to synchronize infrastructure. Residents along the route hope for an ideal tourism corridor connecting existing destinations, from Hoa Phu Thanh Tourist Area, Nui Than Tai Hot Spring Park, Ngam Doi Eco-tourism Area, Toom Sara Tourist Area (Hoa Vang commune)... to Quyet Thang Tea Plantation (Song Vang commune), Bho Hoong Community Tourism Village (Song Kon commune), Dho Roong Community Tourism Village (Dong Giang commune)...

Besides National Highway 14G, another route in need of upgrading is National Highway 14D, connecting the delta with the Nam Giang - Dak Ta Ooc international border gate pair. Dubbed the "road of suffering" by many drivers in recent years, this route is awaiting upgrading with a total investment of over 4,500 billion VND in the period 2025-2027.

Mr. Le Tan Thanh Tung, Deputy General Director of VITRACO Tourism, Transportation and Services Company, observed: “The transportation infrastructure of Da Nang and Quang Nam, which existed before the merger, needs to be synchronized. For example, Da Nang needs to accelerate the upgrading of National Highway 14D to the Nam Giang - Dak Ta Ooc International Border Gate because this route can connect traffic from Tam Ky, Da Nang, through Attapeu and Champasak provinces of Laos, down to Thailand - areas with a high concentration of international tourists.”

Every road that is opened or upgraded is not just a simple transportation route, but also a connecting corridor for the synchronized and sustainable development of Da Nang city, from the sea to the mountains.
