List of candidates for professor and associate professor in 2023

695 people were proposed to be considered for recognition as professors and associate professors in 2023, an increase of nearly 250 people compared to last year and the highest in the past four years.

In the list announced by the State Council of Professors on August 30, there are 76 professor candidates and 619 associate professor candidates. The Council of Professors of Military Science and Security Science does not make the candidates public.

This year, the Economics sector dominates with 102 candidates, including 10 professors and 92 associate professors. The Medicine sector ranks second with 9 professors and 73 associate professors, a total of 82 people. Next, the Chemistry - Food Technology sector has 60 candidates.

Some fields that do not have candidates nominated for professorship are Education, Philosophy - Sociology - Political Science , Pharmacy, Linguistics, Literature, History - Archeology - Ethnology.

Compared to last year, many majors have doubled the number of candidates for professor and associate professor, with Psychology alone increasing eightfold. Last year, this major had only one candidate for associate professor, but this year there are eight.

Metallurgy and Pharmacy have seen the number of candidates increase threefold, from 1 to 3 people and from 4 to 13 people respectively. Many other fields have doubled, such as Linguistics, History - Archeology - Ethnology, Law, Construction - Architecture...

In absolute terms, the number of candidates in Economics increased the most - 43 people (from 59 to 102). Medicine ranked second, with a difference of 29 people, Mechanics - Dynamics 23, Agriculture - Forestry, Construction - Architecture, Electricity - Electronics - Automation all increased by 15 people.

Earth Sciences - Mining was the only major to see a decrease in applicants, from 18 to 17. Information Technology had 19 applicants, similar to last year.

Under the current procedure, universities establish a Basic Council to review applications. After approving the list of qualified candidates, the Basic Council sends the results to the State Council.

The State Council assigns the Industry and Inter-Industry Councils to evaluate and eliminate those who fail to meet the standards. The State Council then reviews and approves the list of qualified candidates, which is usually announced in November and December every year.

Since 2019, candidates for associate professor and professor must be the main author of 3-5 articles in journals listed in ISI, Scopus (a prestigious database system for publishing abstracts and citations of scientific articles) or other categories prescribed by the State Council of Professors. That is why in the past three years, the number of candidates proposed for recognition as professors and associate professors has been only about 450-550 people per year, a sharp decrease compared to the previous period. After the final round of review, about 60-70% of these candidates are officially recognized.

Lecturers who are professors or associate professors can extend their working time for a maximum of 5 years after retirement, if they are healthy and have the need; are given priority in assigning scientific and technological topics and projects... and have the necessary conditions to complete the task.

According to the 2021 Statistical Yearbook, out of 76,000 university lecturers, there are 682 professors and 4,760 associate professors teaching full-time. The number of professors and associate professors is one of the conditions for schools to open postgraduate training programs (master's, doctorate).
