Part 3 was made before Avatar: The Way of Water hit theaters (December 2022, becoming the 3rd highest-grossing film in history with $2.3 billion worldwide). James Cameron shot Avatar 3 and part of Avatar 4 concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water to ensure continuity in age between the characters in the film.

"We did motion capture and live action photography on Avatar 3 while we were making Avatar: The Way of Water . We also shot some of the younger characters in Avatar 4 because we had to imagine how they would have changed six years later," said James Cameron.
The director still has part of Avatar 4 and all of Avatar 5 to shoot. Part 3 was originally scheduled for release in 2024, but Disney delayed the franchise and rescheduled it for December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled for December 21, 2029, followed by the final Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031, 22 years after the first blockbuster Avatar hit theaters in 2009.
Not much is known about Avatar 3 , including its official title, except that James Cameron revealed that it will feature a more antagonistic Na'vi race. Franchise producer Jon Landau said in an interview with Empire magazine earlier this year that Avatar 3 will feature "an aggressive race" led by the Varang.
"There are good people and there are bad people. The Na'vi are no different," Landau added. "Usually, people don't see themselves as bad. What is the underlying cause that makes them develop into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors that we don't know about."

In an interview with GQ magazine, James Cameron said that by expanding the story across multiple Avatar films, he was able to create a series about unique characters as well as technological breakthroughs.
"The big innovation in Avatar 3 is going to be more character depth. We're seeing new cultures, new creatures - all the same things you'd expect from an Avatar movie. But the whole idea of this series is to live with these different people and go on this epic journey with them. So I think not only will it be the most beautiful underwater cinematography ever done, but it will also be a deeper understanding of the hearts and souls of the characters. Some very interesting new characters will appear. It's a journey through time, going on through parts 3, 4 and 5," Cameron said.
The first two parts of the blockbuster Avatar are streaming on Disney+.
