Female student Nguyen Cam Kieu Khanh.

Having determined the goal of studying abroad early, Khanh tried to achieve good academic results during her years at Quoc Hoc Hue High School. Canada is Khanh's dream study abroad destination for three reasons: the country has a qualityeducation system, beautiful nature, and a somewhat cheaper cost of living compared to European countries or the US.

In the early days of living in a foreign country, the Vietnamese female student found it difficult to integrate and make friends. Khanh’s major also had very few international students, with only two students from Asia in the class. Despite the cultural differences, the Hue girl realized that this was an opportunity to step out of her comfort zone.

Initially, Khanh was hesitant between Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biochemistry. Basically, these two majors have quite similar curriculums in the first and second years. From the third year onwards, there is a clear differentiation in specialized knowledge. After finishing the first year, Khanh decided to pursue Pharmaceutical Chemistry to study more deeply and specialized in pharmacy and drug development.

Entering her third year, studying a major with a very heavy amount of knowledge, the Vietnamese female student still "handles" three jobs at the same time. She participates in two research projects with professors at the school and works as a teaching assistant. Although she is very busy, what she receives in return is completely worth it.

Studying abroad in Canada was a "turning point in life" for Kieu Khanh.

In her final year of university, Khanh confidently presented her graduation thesis and was voted the best presentation award. “Coming from a country with a different culture or language is not too big of a barrier if you make an effort,” Khanh said.

To get high scores in all subjects and save time, Khanh reminded herself to “study continuously”, understanding the lesson right after the class ended. That means remembering everything she learned. If she didn’t understand any part, she would stay in the last class and ask the professor to explain it again to grasp the knowledge.

The program I am studying is quite heavy, each semester lasts about 3.5 - 4 months with many consecutive exams. Most important exams such as midterms and finals take place in the same week, so I often plan my review in advance," the female student shared.

As a person with clear goals, Khanh has planned her path to win a scholarship to study for a master's degree since the end of her first year of university. Not only trying to maintain a high GPA, the Vietnamese girl actively participated in research work when she was only in her second year to gain experience.

Instead of choosing a fixed working environment, she tried her hand at 3 different laboratories during her 4 years of university to learn and gain experience. At the same time, the female student carefully studied the scholarship criteria from the end of her first year of university and tried to develop her profile.

Kieu Khanh’s process of “hunting” for graduate scholarships began with researching the research direction of professors at schools that matched her passion and future orientation. In addition, she also prepared necessary documents such as transcripts, recommendation letters, and essays.

The interview round with the professor is a worrying part for many students, however, Khanh believes that this is an opportunity for students to present more clearly about the research they have done and demonstrate their abilities.

After going through the application, essay and interview rounds, Kieu Khanh successfully won a full scholarship to study Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. This September, she will enroll to continue her dream of becoming a scientific researcher and hopes to return to serve her homeland in the future.
