Intensive investment to increase pepper productivity and quality

(GLO)- Over the past two years, pepper prices have increased, helping farmers make good profits. However, people are not investing heavily in new plantings, but are only replanting dead pepper trees and intercropping with coffee and fruit trees. At the same time, they are investing in intensive farming to increase pepper productivity and quality.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Trung (Ia Ring village, Ia Tiem commune, Chu Se district) shared: From the end of 2023 until now, pepper prices have started to increase again, but it is difficult to create a breakthrough in new planting areas. Because most of the previous pepper planting areas have been replaced by coffee, durian...; only households with old pillars in their coffee gardens grow Vinh Linh pepper seedlings themselves or buy Tung Linh pepper seedlings to replant, at most only 50-100 pillars/garden, not planting massively.

My family still maintains 700 pepper plants intercropped in the coffee garden. I am currently renovating the garden, cutting off old, low-yielding pepper plants, and waiting for favorable weather to replant.

Ms. Pham Thi Thom (Group 9, Yen The Ward, Pleiku City) said: Since the beginning of the rainy season, my nursery has prepared about 50 thousand Vinh Linh pepper seedlings to supply to farmers in neighboring areas such as Chu Pah, Dak Doa, etc. People mainly buy pepper seedlings to intercrop, not monoculture. Currently, the price of each pepper seedling is about 10 thousand VND.

“I hope that pepper prices will continue to increase and remain stable, helping farmers make a profit and confidently invest in intensive production to bring high economic efficiency, regaining their previous position. Thereby, nursery gardeners will also have a more favorable business,” said Ms. Thom.

According to the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the province currently has about 7,501 hectares of pepper, of which 146 hectares are newly planted, the rest are in the commercial stage. The average yield is 35.2 quintals/ha. In 2024, pepper output will reach about 21,670 tons.

Pepper acreage is mainly concentrated in the districts: Dak Doa 1,986 ha, Chu Prong 1,266 ha, Chu Se 1,169 ha, Chu Puh 840 ha, Duc Co 654 ha; the rest is scattered in other localities about 825 ha. The main varieties are Vinh Linh, Phu Quoc, Loc Ninh, buffalo pepper... Of which, Vinh Linh pepper occupies the largest area thanks to its outstanding yield and good resistance to harmful pests and diseases.

According to the agricultural restructuring plan for the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2025, the province's pepper growing area will remain under 8,000 hectares, focusing on investment to increase the processing rate by more than 30%. In the 2021-2025 period, the area for new pepper planting will not be expanded.

Mr. Le Sy Quy - Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Chu Se District - informed: Currently, pepper prices have increased again but people do not expand the area but mainly take advantage of the remaining pepper poles in the garden to plant. The district encourages people to intercrop, produce according to organic standards, VietGAP to increase the value and quality of pepper.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Thi Tho - Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection - said: Currently, local farmers are planting seasonal crops as well as planting new long-term industrial crops such as pepper, coffee, rubber, and fruit trees.

Regarding pepper, the industry has directed localities to instruct farmers to only plant in areas with suitable soil and climate conditions. At the same time, invest in intensive farming to increase productivity and quality, put into commercial exploitation of planting areas from 2020-2021; focus on managing and developing pepper areas suitable for the consumption market; resolutely reduce old pepper areas, low productivity, pests and diseases... and switch to other crops.

In addition, choosing good pepper varieties suitable for soil and climate conditions; prioritizing intercropping to bring sustainability; supporting cooperation and production linkages, applying scientific and technical advances in garden design, applying water-saving irrigation, using live poles, producing certified pepper, following the organic direction...

In addition, the Department continues to guide localities to guide people to produce pepper in the direction of value chain linkage; organize training and guide farmers to produce pepper in the direction of organic, VietGAP... to improve the value and quality of products in the domestic and export markets.
