At the iPhone 17 launch event on the evening of September 9, Apple not only introduced a new phone line but also introduced a controversial accessory, the iPhone Crossbody Strap.
This is the first time the American technology giant has officially joined the phone strap trend that has been popular in Europe and Asia for many years.
At first glance, this product seems simple, consisting of only a strap to hang the iPhone on the chest or side, making it easy for users to operate when moving, cycling, shopping or attending festivals.
But the point that makes it the center of discussion is the price of 59 USD (the price on Apple Store Vietnam is 1,668 million VND), not to mention the fact that users also have to buy a compatible case, which costs from 50 USD or more. Thus, customers will have to spend over 100 USD if they want to own the whole set.
Apple explains its difference from its competitors in terms of materials and design. The strap is made entirely from recycled PET fiber, aiming for sustainability, while also integrating a unique adjustment mechanism. Instead of mechanical latches or buttons, Apple uses a flexible magnet system combined with a stainless steel slider.
Thanks to this, users can easily adjust the length of the strap from 1-2 m without worrying about the strap being loose. When needing to shorten it to take photos, pay or lengthen it when wearing it across the body, the operation is quick and easy.
These innovations help the accessory stand out from the cheaper options on the market. Many brands such as XouXou, Casetify or Bandolier have long exploited the phone strap segment, but their products mainly use conventional locking mechanisms, with prices ranging from $29 to nearly $200 . For Apple, the ecosystem synchronization factor, the care in processing and the seamless design philosophy are the reasons for the higher price than the average.
However, many people are still skeptical. On technology forums, many opinions say that 59 USD for a strap is too expensive, especially when users are forced to buy an additional Apple case to use it.
Some people are concerned about the safety factor, saying that wearing a phone outside the body makes it an easy target for thieves. On the other hand, many people see it as a valuable addition, especially for those who travel frequently and want to reduce the need to carry a bag.
Apple isn’t the first company to make phone straps, but the introduction of the accessory will certainly bring more attention to this segment. With a strong brand and the ability to create trends, iPhone straps can quickly become a fashion accessory, in addition to the protection and convenience functions.
The question remains whether consumers are willing to spend more than $100 for a strap and case. For Apple, this may be just a small product in the accessory category. However, for consumers, it is a matter of weighing convenience, aesthetics and a not-so-pleasant price.
