Promoting international cooperation in agriculture

Proactively expanding cooperation with international organizations and actively participating in projects has helped Son La Provincial Agricultural Extension Center implement many practical programs, models and activities; mobilize support capital, help farmers apply advanced techniques in production, increase productivity, income and improve life.

In recent years, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center has coordinated with the International Agroforestry Research Organization in Vietnam (ICRAF) to implement the project "Promoting and expanding market-oriented agroforestry and forest restoration solutions for the Northwest region of Vietnam". The project is divided into 2 phases, including the 2012-2017 phase and the 2018-2021 phase, implemented for nearly 200 households in Mai Son, Van Ho, Quynh Nhai and Thuan Chau districts.

The project has built 3 nurseries in Mai Son district, 20 agroforestry models: Late-ripening longan - corn - grass, hawthorn - corn - grass for livestock, macadamia - coffee - beans... In addition, it organizes training courses, seminars, creates conditions for households to visit and learn from experience in producing agroforestry and integrated agroforestry models in some neighboring provinces; supports fruit tree varieties, forest trees, grass varieties, fertilizers; provides consulting and technical support for households to apply safe and effective production processes... contributing to promoting environmentally friendly agroforestry systems, improving people's livelihoods, strengthening forest management, and responding to climate change.

Mr. Lo Van Lich is one of 29 households in Na Ban village, Hat Lot commune participating in the agroforestry model to combat climate change. Over the past 10 years, Mr. Lich's family has converted 1.3 hectares of sloping hill land to implement the integrated agroforestry model. Mr. Lich shared: Currently, the family's hill land has been covered with longan and mango trees. In addition, the family intercrops with guinea grass to raise large livestock, bringing in an income of about 200 million VND/year.

In addition, in 2023, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will coordinate with the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) to implement the Project "Building a model for replanting Arabica coffee, training farmers and providing other support for Arabica coffee production, to enhance resilience to climate change". The project will demonstrate replanting 10 hectares of coffee with THA1 variety; provide 350,000 THA1 coffee seedlings, 1,000 macadamia trees, nearly 55 tons of organic microbial fertilizer, 10 tons of lime powder and Trichoderma fungicide to support households replanting 25.7 hectares of coffee intercropped with macadamia trees in the City, Thuan Chau and Mai Son districts. In addition, the project organizes training courses on farming methods, sustainable Arabica coffee production management, climate-smart sustainable coffee cultivation, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Uoc, Director of the City Agricultural Service Center, said: The GIZ project supports the implementation of a demonstration model in Chieng Den commune; supports seedlings and agricultural materials for 20 households in Chieng Co, Chieng Ngan communes and Chieng An ward to replant 11 hectares of coffee. Up to now, the macadamia trees have grown to an average height of 1.5-1.6 m, with a survival rate of 95%. The coffee trees in particular have grown well, with an average height of 50-60 cm, a survival rate of 87% and no pests or diseases.

Ms. Cam Thi Tham, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: Through international projects, typical projects include: AAV - sloping land cultivation, community veterinary, GTZ of Germany - forestry, SNV of the Netherlands - sustainable agroforestry cultivation on sloping land, ICRAF of Australia - building agroforestry livelihoods, AIAR of Australia - sustainable corn cultivation on sloping land, JICA of Japan, LCASP - building biogas tanks... Son La Agricultural Extension has the opportunity to learn and access advanced scientific and technological advances in the world and in the region. Thanks to that, it helps agricultural extension officers and farmers update the latest scientific and technological advances, apply them to production practices, improve productivity and quality of agricultural products, and develop the province's agricultural sector sustainably.
