The “Three Godparents” movement was launched by the Quang Ninh Association for the Promotion of Education in 2007, with the goal of sponsoring poor students to overcome difficulties, sponsoring excellent students to become successful, and sponsoring disabled students to excel. Up to now, the movement has developed widely throughout the province, attracting the participation of many agencies, businesses, social organizations and philanthropists.
The story of Bui Minh Sang (born in 2016) in Troi 9 area, Hoanh Bo ward is a touching testament to the meaning of the "Godfather" movement. Sang's father unfortunately had an accident that left him paralyzed in both legs, while his mother was in poor health and had no stable job, all three of Sang's brothers were of school age. Faced with that situation, from the beginning of 2023, the abbot of Van Phong pagoda accepted to sponsor Sang with a support of 1 million VND/month until he turned 18 years old.
Bui Minh Sang shared: "The monthly support money has helped my parents take better care of me and my education. I promise to try my best to study well so as not to let down the help of the monks in the temple." The timely support from the temple has given Sang more motivation to continue to fulfill his dream of going to school and achieving good academic results.
Venerable Thich Thanh Van, abbot of Van Phong Pagoda, said: Responding to the "Three Godfathers" movement launched by the locality, the pagoda has taken on the responsibility of regularly sponsoring Bui Minh Sang until he is 18 years old. This is in accordance with the Buddha's teachings to make people living in peace and happiness, especially the young generation.
Similarly, in Po Hen village, Quang Duc commune, Ly Anh Huy (born 2011), a Dao ethnic, also has a particularly difficult situation. His father left when Huy was young, his mother and brother had to work far away to earn a living, leaving him alone in a small house. In the most desperate moment, officers and soldiers of Quang Duc Border Post opened their arms, accepting to sponsor Huy under the program "Helping you go to school". This is a program implemented by Quang Ninh Border Guard since 2016 and is considered a bright spot in the "Godfather" movement of the province. Accordingly, every month, the "foster fathers" wearing green military uniforms come to visit, bringing Huy a support of 500,000 VND, along with books, clothes and more importantly, care and tutoring for him to study.
Talking to reporters, Ly Anh Huy emotionally shared: “If it weren’t for the “foster fathers” at the border guard station, I would probably have had to drop out of school. They not only gave me money for food and books, but also taught me lessons and taught me good things and right reasons.” In response to that love, Huy has constantly made efforts. In the 2024-2025 school year, he achieved good academic results and good conduct.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Cong Hung, Political Commissar of Quang Duc Border Post, said: “The activity of sponsoring students in difficult circumstances not only has the meaning of supporting and lighting up the dream of studying for many poor students, but also contributes to strengthening the increasingly strong solidarity between the army and the people. From there, we can mobilize the people to participate in firmly protecting the sovereignty and security of the national border."
Not only the above two cases, responding to the "Three Godfathers" movement, in recent years, all levels, sectors, localities and units in the whole province have also actively and flexibly mobilized social resources, built funds to sponsor students in difficult circumstances, and encouraged them to strive to study well. From the beginning of 2025 until now, the whole province has had 1,092 students sponsored and assisted, including 692 students in difficult circumstances, 184 disabled students, 216 excellent students, with a total amount of money and goods estimated at over 6 billion VND.
Thanks to this support, no poor or disabled student in the province has to drop out of school. The movement not only brings material value, but also arouses and promotes the nation's tradition of "Love others as you love yourself". With practical activities, the "Godfather" movement continues to spread, "fueling" the young generation to constantly strive, while creating more resources for Quang Ninh to continue building a learning society.
