Banh mi Cu Ly has just entered the top 10 famous and long-standing bread brands, operating for over 50 years in Ho Chi Minh City, recognized by the Vietnam Record Organization.
Only ham, onion, cucumber, sold for three hours in the morning, 500 loaves per day. Each loaf of bread costs from 25,000 VND to 30,000 VND. At around 6am every day except Sunday, Nguyen Hoang Quoc Thien and his family set out a tray of bread lined with banana leaves with various types of beef sausage, cinnamon sausage, fried sausage, pork sausage, and head cheese on the sidewalk. First-time visitors rarely know that this tray of bread has existed for more than 70 years.
Mr. Ly is originally from the North. He used to sell bread in alley 191 Hai Ba Trung for nearly 60 years. Mr. Thien is the third generation to continue the bread selling business. He still keeps the family recipe from Mr. Ly's time. Many people in Ho Chi Minh City are probably familiar with this flavor. "I don't add pate and butter partly so that people don't get bored because my bread already has a lot of ham and because this is a Northern bread, it only has ham" - Mr. Thien said.
Mr. Thien said that in about 3 hours in the morning, Mr. Ly sold about 500 loaves of bread, along with about 40 - 50kg of ham.
"This place sells cheap and delicious bread, so I chose it. I've been eating here for 4-5 years. I buy it every morning. One loaf is enough to keep me full until noon," said Ms. Tran Xuan Mai (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City).
Mr. Hung (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) said that he visits Banh Mi Cu Ly 3 to 5 days a week. "The bread here is not boring, the price is not expensive and there is a lot of sausage. I have been eating here for several years" - Mr. Hung expressed.
