BPO - Over the past 30 years, from a country exporting raw cashews in small quantities, Vietnam has become the world's leading cashew nut exporter. Since 2006, the Vietnamese cashew industry has always maintained its number 1 position in the world in exporting cashew nuts. The presence of Binh Phuoc cashew nuts has contributed to bringing Vietnamese cashew nuts to nearly 100 countries and territories around the world. Binh Phuoc cashew nuts have maintained their throne and become a great ambassador to help Binh Phuoc's economy develop more deeply and widely.

The best product in the world

The owner of one of the largest cashew processing enterprises in the country, Mr. Ta Quang Huyen, Director of Hoang Son 1 Cashew Processing Joint Stock Company, Bu Dang district, said that the enterprise always prioritizes buying Vietnamese cashew nuts in general and Binh Phuoc in particular for processing because the nuts are less broken and have better quality than cashew nuts from Cambodia, India, Ivory Coast, and West Africa. Therefore, the price of domestic cashew nuts is always higher than the price of imported cashew nuts. "Currently, European customers are very fond of Vietnamese cashew products, especially cashew nuts with geographical indications from Binh Phuoc. Our cashew nuts are the best products in the world, so farmers can rest assured to take care of and develop their cashew gardens," Mr. Huyen emphasized.

Binh Phuoc is known as the cashew capital of Vietnam. The province currently has more than 152,000 hectares of cashew, with an output of 170,000 tons/year, accounting for nearly 50% of the country's cashew area and output. Of which, the cashew growing area of ethnic minorities is about 50,000 hectares. Cashew productivity is high due to suitable natural conditions, especially Binh Phuoc has introduced high-yielding cashew varieties suitable for ecological sub-regions, applied new technical advances in planting, and intensively cared for to help the orchards grow and develop well.

Binh Phuoc is the most vibrant cashew production and trading area in the country with more than 1,400 small and medium-sized cashew processing facilities, creating regular jobs for more than 50,000 workers. The province is also considered the world's number 1 cashew processing center, with a capacity of 500,000 tons of raw cashews per year.

Cashew processing is the province's key and strong industry, contributing 27-45% of total export turnover each year. In 2022, the total export value of cashew products of Binh Phuoc reached 1.045 billion USD. Processed cashew products in the province are exported to more than 50 countries around the world, accounting for about 70% of the export market share of the world's cashew industry. The cashew processing industry has contributed to a strong transformation of the agricultural production structure, from self-sufficient, self-reliant agriculture to modern agriculture, large-scale commodity production.

Binh Phuoc has many businesses processing cashews in large quantities to meet the purchasing and export requirements of the group”.

Applying technology to increase competitiveness

In addition to processing cashew nuts for export, thanks to mastering the technology, recently, many businesses in Binh Phuoc have gradually shifted to deep processing to diversify products, serving many consumers. The whole province currently has 283 cashew nut deep processing facilities with 35 products, rich and diverse designs, circulating in the domestic and international markets such as: honey cashews, garlic chili roasted cashews, salt roasted cashews, wasabi cashews, cheese cashews, coconut milk roasted cashews... These products are ranked 4-star and 5-star OCOP.

Binh Phuoc is also the only locality in the country that is recognized for geographical indication protection of cashew nuts. Currently, the whole province has 9 enterprises that have been granted certificates of rights to use the geographical indication "Binh Phuoc Cashew Nuts". This is a tool to help enterprises increase product value, expand markets, increase access to demanding markets, increase competitiveness in the world market, and at the same time ensure sustainable development. Mr. Hoang Chuan, Director of Hoang Phu Production Company Limited, Loc Ninh district, excitedly said: When there was no geographical indication, the company sold cashew products everywhere and said Binh Phuoc cashew nuts, many people were skeptical. Since the geographical indication, we have printed the logo on the product packaging, consumers look at it and know that this is a product made from 100% Binh Phuoc cashew nuts, and they are more confident in buying and using it.

“Binh Phuoc cashew nuts are granted geographical indication protection, which is a tool in building and developing the value of Binh Phuoc cashew nut brand, especially in foreign markets. One of the reasons for the success of Binh Phuoc cashew industry today is the modern processing technology, machinery, equipment and technological lines, which help increase productivity, save raw materials, reduce costs, and meet the requirements of international customers. Thanks to the constantly innovated technological line, the facilities have completed the criteria system to be certified with international standards on food safety such as BRC, ISO 22000, HACCP... The application of science and technology helps cashew processing enterprises increase product value, increase profits for enterprises and contribute to increasing budget revenue; is a lever to help Binh Phuoc's cashew processing industry develop, contributing to promoting exports.

The Department has advised the Provincial People's Committee on scientific and technological tasks, research on potential and characteristics of good cashew varieties. At the same time, we have coordinated with other sectors to train farmers and cooperatives in cashew tree care and development. In the research and application of science and technology, we focus on developing, researching and producing products from cashew fruit to maximize the value of cashew trees, while helping businesses build, develop brands and innovate technology.
