Escape from critical situation thanks to CPR
On June 10, Bach Mai Hospital reported on community emergency cases that helped patients escape the jaws of death.
That is the case of a male patient who was taken from Thai Nguyen General Hospital to Bach Mai Hospital.
The accident happened one morning, when he saw many dead Koi fish floating in the pond, Mr. P. (Thai Nguyen) jumped down to check and sank to the bottom of the pond.
The wife stood on the shore and saw her husband unconscious and sinking. Suspecting that there was a problem with the fish tank, she called for help. About 2 minutes after Mr. P sank into the fish tank, he was brought to shore by everyone.
About 4 minutes after falling into the fish pond and suffering cardiac arrest due to electric shock, the patient began receiving continuous chest compressions while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Thanks to continuous CPR, when he was taken to Thai Nguyen General Hospital, Mr. P. had a pulse, a heartbeat and was breathing again. After being intubated, the patient was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital to check for other injuries. The patient was discharged from the hospital and is in good health after a short time.
In another case, a 5-year-old boy ( Hanoi ) played with his pants' drawstring, causing it to get caught around his neck, leaving him hanging in the air. When his family discovered it, the child was purple and had difficulty breathing.
The father quickly helped the child down, gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions for 5 minutes, the child began breathing on his own again, his lips turned pink and he was taken to the emergency room. After 5 days in the hospital, the child was completely conscious. The results of the heart, lungs, brain MRI, and cervical spine scan showed no abnormalities.
In another case, a 19-month-old child (in Thai Nguyen) drowned after falling into a bucket of water. When the family discovered the child, he was cyanotic and had stopped breathing. Luckily, the family members had first aid knowledge and immediately took him out of the bucket of water. After about 5-7 minutes of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the child vomited water and food and began breathing again, although he was still in a coma.
Doctors show first aid, increasing the patient's chance of survival
Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that in reality, many accident cases have overcome critical conditions thanks to the patients receiving first aid from the beginning, saving their lives.
If first aid is not given properly to help the patient regain circulation, even if they are taken to the hospital, doctors will be helpless because the cardiac arrest has been going on for too long. Therefore, first aid is very important, it is the deciding factor in the victim's ability to survive, minimize sequelae, and death before reaching medical staff and facilities.
A doctor from the A9 Emergency Center of Bach Mai Hospital said: "If first aid is performed correctly within the first 5 minutes, the chance of survival of a patient with cardiac arrest can increase 2-3 times."
Below are first aid instructions for some common situations as instructed by doctors at Bach Mai Hospital:
Cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest (CPR)
Steps: “Check - Call for support - CPR”.
Accordingly, if you see an unconscious patient, shake and tap the patient's shoulder. Observe breathing (for 5-10 seconds). Call for support and quickly give first aid to the patient.
Place the patient on his or her back on a hard, flat surface. Continue chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until an ambulance arrives or the patient starts breathing again on his or her own.
Foreign body in airway
When a foreign body is present in the airway, if emergency treatment is delayed for just a few minutes, the brain will lack oxygen and lead to serious damage or death.
First aid should be given quickly by performing the Heimlich maneuver - hugging from behind, placing your hand under the sternum and pressing quickly and strongly upwards to dislodge the foreign object.
Treatment of burns and bleeding wounds
For people with thermal burns , the first aid principle is: "Cool - Cover - Take to hospital".
Soak or rinse the burned area with clean, cool water (not ice water) for at least 15-20 minutes. Cover the burn with a clean cloth or sterile gauze. Seek medical attention immediately if the burn is extensive or deep.
For bleeding people : “Press firmly - Raise - Bandage”. Use gauze or clean cloth to press firmly directly on the wound. Raise the bleeding area (if possible). Bandage firmly and take the patient to the nearest medical facility if bleeding is heavy.
First aid for drowning
First aid for drowning children
Drowning treatment follows the principle: "Pull up - Check - CPR immediately".
Accordingly, it is necessary to get the victim out of the water as quickly as possible. Lay the patient on a flat surface, check consciousness and breathing.
If the patient stops breathing/cardiac arrest, immediately perform CPR (30 compressions, 2 breaths), continuously until the patient regains consciousness or an ambulance arrives.
