Writer Binh Nguyen Loc (1914 - 1987), whose real name is To Van Tuan, came from a family of 10 generations living in Tan Uyen, Bien Hoa province (now Binh Duong province). He was a writer and Southern culturalist specializing in ethnology, language and classical literature. During his writing career, he had about 50 novels, 1,000 short stories and 4 research books. Some of his works were lost or destroyed during the war before they could be published.

Under the very realistic and life-like writing of writer Binh Nguyen Loc, the countryside atmosphere in "Do Doc" is flat and dull, vividly depicted with rains that blur everything, with the sound of insects chirping, with the surrounding garden work... That desolation is emphasized by the writer:

“The four girls felt so sad, as if they were forgotten by the whole world. The world was just having fun and loving, not knowing that in a corner of the countryside there were young people, still enjoying themselves and at the age of love, suddenly because of their family background, they had to retreat into seclusion like civil servants who had finished their term of service, and did not know when they would be able to leave this place.”

Mrs. Nam Thanh also soon realized: "This is not their place. Their place must be more cheerful, youthful, and lively than this gloomy atmosphere...".

In Do Doc , the woman's body is no different from a commodity for sale. Every time a customer wants to buy, the commodity is displayed in many aspects. People look at the front, they look at the back, they examine the way she walks, they listen to her voice... Then they criticize and praise her in their hearts, or think to themselves: "The goods are just mediocre, but if the price is good, I will buy them."

Writing about a transitional society, when modernity was just beginning to spread from the city to the countryside, writer Binh Nguyen Loc had a very humane perspective when talking about the changes in contemporary people's concepts of marriage and women. This is even more clearly shown when the central character is a family with 4 daughters and only daughters.

Like many other works by writers Son Nam and Vuong Hong Sen, Do Doc by writer Binh Nguyen Loc is not only a story of human love, life filled with love in the generous Southern land, but also a treasure trove of the words of the common people of the South. This is one of the most highly regarded novels by writer Binh Nguyen Loc, winning the National Literature Award in 1959 - 1960.

The Ferry by writer Binh Nguyen Loc was first published by Nang Moi Publishing House in 1973. Later, several other publishing houses reprinted it and it was made into a film - produced by TFS.
