The fishing festival in Canh Duong commune is held annually and is the largest in Quang Binh province, taking place in a fishing village with a history of nearly 400 years of formation and development.

Unique Cau Ngu Festival in Phan Thiet, Binh Thuan

On the morning of February 24 (January 15 of the Lunar calendar), the Fishing Prayer Ceremony and the launch of the new 2024 sea season at Canh Duong fishing village, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province, attracted a large number of people and tourists to participate.

Mr. Ho Quang Huong, the Master of Ceremonies, said: "This fishing ceremony has been held since ancient times by our ancestors on the 15th day of the 11th lunar month, called the Opening Ceremony. After the renovation period, the ceremony was held at the beginning of the year on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month every year to let fishermen go out to catch seafood at the beginning of the year.

With a history of nearly 400 years, Canh Duong fishing village is considered a land of outstanding people. Not only famous for Canh Duong mural village, this land also has many differences compared to other fishing villages in the country.

From early morning, boat owners, fishermen, locals and tourists gather at Ngu Linh Mieu temple and Cau Ngu hermitage in front of Canh Duong fishing village to burn incense and offer offerings to the God of Fish. Fishermen believe that whales are fish that have helped boats avoid sinking in storms many times, and the custom of worshipping whales with a sincere heart originates from that.

At the fishing ceremony, the village elders and fishermen pray for a year of favorable weather, a bountiful fishing season, and safe fishing.

Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong, 60 years old, in Thuong Giang village, Canh Duong commune, Quang Trach district said that after the fishing ceremony, fishermen with offshore boats simultaneously went out to sea to open the sea, starting the new fishing season: "Today's festival is very important, it is an occasion to start fishing at the beginning of the year. All boats from offshore to offshore fishing go out to sea to fish, praying for heaven, earth and the sea to bless the fishermen to have a successful business."

The most important ritual part of the fishing festival will be the offering of incense and reading of the Fish God by the most prestigious elder in the village. The text must express gratitude for the protection and support of the Whale and the Whale Lady for fishermen during their sea voyages, as well as the fishermen's prayers for a peaceful sea season, favorable weather, calm seas, full holds of fish and shrimp, good crops, and a happy and prosperous life. The ceremony ends with a folk dance and a rowing boat dance. After the ceremony, fishing boats in the commune will prepare to go out to sea to catch seafood at the beginning of the year.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Quang Trung, Vice Chairman of Quang Trach District People's Committee emphasized: Cau Ngu Festival of Canh Duong commune is a traditional festival imbued with the cultural identity of coastal people, which has an important meaning ineducating and fostering love for the homeland and the spirit of community cohesion. The festival is a cultural activity with spiritual significance; remembering the virtues of Mr. and Mrs. Whales, praying for calm seas, favorable weather, good harvests, prosperity, peace and happiness in the village...
