Valladolid cannot stay in La Liga. |
After 33 rounds, Valladolid has only 16 points, 18 points behind the safe zone of Alaves, while there are only 5 matches left in the season. This is the 3rd time in the last 7 years that Valladolid has had to say goodbye to the highest league in Spain.
The defeat marks a sustained period of poor performance for Valladolid throughout the season, with the team owned by President Ronaldo de Lima losing 13 of their last 14 matches and having a terrible goal difference of -57.
Valladolid have had two coaching changes during this turbulent season, with Diego Cocca and Paulo Pezzolano sacked before former club player Alvaro Rubio took over in February. Despite his efforts to improve the situation, Rubio admitted after the defeat to Betis: “All excuses are meaningless. We have to take responsibility and learn to get up after falling.”
The relegation has also sparked criticism from fans who say the Brazilian owner has been inattentive and absent from the club. There are reports that Ronaldo is preparing to sell the club.
Valladolid have returned to LaLiga twice after just one season in the second tier (2021/22 and 2023/24), so fans are still hopeful that the club will return to La Liga next season.
