Vietnam golf team prepares for SEA Games 33:

The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33) will take place from December 9 to 20, 2025 in Thailand. Aiming to conquer the highest position and affirm the position of Vietnamese golf in the regional arena, the national golf team is actively preparing its forces and looking for potential athletes with high expertise.

Putting expertise first

The 2025 Vietnam Amateur Open Golf Championship for Men and Women just ended on June 14 in Da Lat ( Lam Dong province). The results of this tournament were chosen by the National Golf Team Coaching Board as the basis for selecting athletes to participate in the 33rd SEA Games.

In the final round of the tournament, two young talents Nguyen Trong Hoang and Ho Anh Huy had a thrilling score chase. In the end, Nguyen Trong Hoang won the championship. Golfer Ho Anh Huy finished second. In the women's category, Thai golfer Marisa Tojal won the championship after four rounds. The Vietnamese representatives also achieved encouraging results: Le Chuc An ranked 3rd, and Anna Le ranked 4th. At the end of the tournament, the Vietnam Golf Association confirmed that the 4 athletes with the best results, including Nguyen Trong Hoang and Ho Anh Huy (men), Le Chuc An and Anna Le (women), will officially be part of the Vietnamese golf team attending the 33rd SEA Games.

Head coach of the Vietnam golf team and head of the golf department (Vietnam Sports Administration - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) Nguyen Thai Duong said that choosing the results of the tournament as the selection criteria helps to increase professional quality, attracting the participation of many prominent faces such as: Nguyen Tuan Anh, Do Duong Gia Minh, Nguyen Bao Minh, Nguyen Dang Minh, Doan Huy, Nguyen Ngoc Gia Huy, Nguyen Duc Son, Nguyen Bao Chau, Nguyen Viet Gia Han, Le Khanh Hung... Only Nguyen Anh Minh - the current number 1 golfer in Vietnam - was absent due to being busy studying and competing abroad.

General Secretary of the Vietnam Golf Association Vu Nguyen assessed that the results of the tournament reflected the athletes' abilities and progress. At the same time, it created conditions for the coaching board to build a thorough preparation plan for the goal of winning medals at the 33rd SEA Games. This is also an important motivation for young golfers to confidently head to the continental playground, conquering new heights.

Strive to achieve medal target

At the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, the Vietnamese golf team achieved success with 3 medals, including 1 individual gold medal by Le Khanh Hung. This achievement helps affirm the strong development potential of Vietnamese golf in the Southeast Asian region. However, according to Mr. Vu Nguyen, compared to strong golf countries in Southeast Asia such as Thailand or the Philippines, Vietnamese golf still has a certain gap. Vietnamese golf still does not have a strong and even enough athlete force to be able to create an overwhelming position in the competition. In addition, not many Vietnamese golfers have participated in the top playgrounds of world professional golf. Therefore, accumulating experience in top competition is still an issue that needs to be resolved soon for Vietnamese golf. Therefore, in the immediate future, the goal of winning at least 2 gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games is not an easy challenge.

Head coach of the Vietnam golf team Nguyen Thai Duong said that to realize this goal, the Vietnam Golf Association has coordinated with the Vietnam Sports Administration to select the best athletes for the national team. Many faces such as Nguyen Anh Minh, Le Khanh Hung, Nguyen Tuan Anh, Le Chuc An... are in good form, however, the psychological factor of competition is still decisive and needs to be resolved through participation in many top international tournaments. From now until the 33rd SEA Games, there are more than 6 months left, the team list is still "open". It is expected that 3 more athletes will join the team before September 1, 2025. According to the plan, the team will have an important training session in Thailand before officially entering the competition.

Head of the High Performance Sports Department (Vietnam Sports Administration) Hoang Quoc Vinh said that the industry will create the best conditions for the golf team to train and compete. He said that golf is a sport suitable for the qualities of Vietnamese people, as long as they train properly and in the right direction, they can achieve high results in the Southeast Asian arena. However, because this is a sport with a large investment cost, long-term training and competition abroad requires the mobilization of additional social resources.

Hopefully, with the unity and determination of the athletes, coaches and support from management levels, the Vietnamese golf team, especially the young talents, will continue to make their mark in regional and international arenas in the coming time, first of all at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.
