Developing the hill and garden economy has become one of the key "breakthroughs," fundamentally changing the life and appearance of rural areas in Vu Quang mountainous commune.

Thanks to the support of the government and the application of scientific and technological advancements, many households have transformed their land into fertile fields, escaping poverty and rising to become well-off, even becoming wealthy right on their homeland.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ninh's integrated economic model in Dong Minh village.

The family of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ninh in Dong Minh village is a prime example of effective hillside farming in the locality. With over 4 hectares of hillside land, he boldly invested in a comprehensive VAC (garden - pond - livestock) economic model, yielding outstanding results. Currently, his farm maintains a regular livestock scale of 100 pigs per batch, combined with over 2 hectares of oranges and over 2 hectares of water surface for fish farming. The total income from his family's VAC model reaches hundreds of millions of VND per year.

Furthermore, planting nearly 20 hectares of acacia trees for timber production and implementing forest regeneration measures also brings in a stable income of 130-150 million VND per harvesting cycle.

"The land here is very suitable for acacia trees and citrus fruit trees like oranges. Thanks to the guidance and support of the government, my family has applied efficient production methods. The success of this model has not only increased income but also contributed to changing the face of our homeland," Mr. Ninh shared.

The organic orange orchard provides a decent income for Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh (village 1) each season.

In Hamlet 1, Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh is one of the pioneers in "nurturing" orange trees. More than 20 years ago, thanks to the timely support of the government through preferential loan policies, provision of seedlings, and transfer of planting techniques, Mr. Thanh, along with many other households, renovated their hillside orchards to develop orange cultivation.

"The land rewards hard work," and now, the 1.5-hectare organic orange orchard, laden with fruit, has helped Mr. Thanh's family build a spacious and comfortable home. Notably, in early 2022, his family's orange orchard was certified organic by Vinacontrol Inspection Company Limited in Ho Chi Minh City.

“This certification not only affirms the quality but also helps my family expand our market and increase economic value. Every year, we earn about 350-400 million VND from selling oranges. Thanks to the stable income, my family has more resources to invest in production and stabilize our lives,” Mr. Thanh happily shared.

Mr. Phan Dang Vuong focuses on caring for his family's plots of purple ginseng.

Not content with traditional crops, some farmers in Vu Quang commune have boldly experimented with new, high-value varieties. A prime example is Mr. Phan Dang Vuong in Hamlet 3 with his model of growing purple ginseng. Taking advantage of the hilly terrain, at the end of 2022, after thorough research, Mr. Vuong invested nearly 600 million VND to improve the land and conduct a trial planting of nearly 2 hectares of this plant.

Mr. Vuong said: "The profit from growing purple ginseng is many times higher than other crops on the same area. Although it is still in the experimental stage, purple ginseng has shown positive signs: it is suitable for the local soil and climate; the plants grow well. According to calculations, 1 hectare planted with more than 20,000 plants, if each plant reaches a weight of 1.5 - 2 kg and the selling price of fresh roots ranges from 120,000 - 140,000 VND/kg, 1 hectare of purple ginseng can bring in billions of VND in revenue for growers.”

Mr. Vuong's nearly 2 hectares of purple ginseng plants are thriving.

As a mountainous border commune with an area of over 533 km2 , Vu Quang has identified hill and garden farming as a strength and a "lever" to promote economic development.

Over the years, local authorities have developed numerous projects and policies for the development of hill and garden economies. After the policy was widely disseminated among the people, coupled with maximum support from the local government, people have gained more motivation and confidence to develop hill and forest economies. For households with forest land, people have also done a good job of protecting natural forests and cultivating regenerated forests...

Vu Quang commune has developed 531 economic models that generate an income of 100 million VND per year.

To date, the entire commune has established 531 farming and livestock models generating an income of 100 million VND or more per year, spread across all villages. This development not only boosts household economies but also creates jobs for many local laborers.

Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Hang, Head of the Economic Department of Vu Quang Commune, said: "Developing hill and garden farming is a major policy. In recent years, the locality has implemented many policies to encourage this, such as providing loan support, opening technical training courses, and introducing high-yield crop varieties into production. Thanks to people's application of science and technology, many models have achieved high profits, effectively exploiting land potential and opening up a legitimate and sustainable path to wealth for people in the border region."
