Developing hill garden economy has become one of the key "breakthroughs", helping to fundamentally change the life and appearance of rural areas in the mountainous commune of Vu Quang.

Thanks to the support of the government and the application of scientific and technological advances, many households have turned their land into "productive fields", escaped poverty and become well-off households, getting rich right on their homeland.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ninh's comprehensive economic model in Dong Minh village.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ninh's family in Dong Minh village is a typical example of effective local hill garden economic development. With more than 4 hectares of hill land, he has boldly invested in the comprehensive VAC (garden - pond - barn) economic model, bringing outstanding efficiency. Currently, his farm maintains a regular livestock scale of 100 pigs/batch, combined with more than 2 hectares of oranges and more than 2 hectares of water surface for fish farming. The total income from his family's VAC model reaches hundreds of millions of VND per year.

Not only that, planting nearly 20 hectares of raw acacia forest and implementing forest regeneration also brings a stable income of 130 - 150 million VND/harvest cycle.

"The land here is very suitable for acacia trees and citrus fruit trees such as oranges. Thanks to the guidance and support of the government, the family has applied effective production. The success of the model not only increases income but also contributes to changing the face of the homeland" - Mr. Ninh shared.

Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh's (village 1) organic orange garden brings in a good income each crop.

In village 1, Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh is one of the pioneers in "nurturing" orange trees. More than 20 years ago, thanks to the timely "support" of the government through preferential loan support policies, seed supply and planting technique transfer, Mr. Thanh and many households renovated their hill gardens to develop orange trees.

"The land does not fail the people", now the organic orange garden full of fruit of more than 1.5 hectares has helped Mr. Thanh's family build a spacious house. Notably, in early 2022, his family's orange garden was granted an organic certificate by Vinacontrol Inspection Company Limited , Ho Chi Minh City.

“This certification not only affirms the quality but also helps my family expand the market and increase economic value. Every year, we earn about 350 - 400 million VND from selling oranges. Thanks to the stable income, my family has more conditions to invest in production and stabilize our lives,” Mr. Thanh happily shared.

Mr. Phan Dang Vuong focuses on taking care of his family's purple sanchi growing areas.

Not stopping at traditional crops, some farmers in Vu Quang commune have boldly experimented with new, high-value varieties. A typical example is Mr. Phan Dang Vuong in village 3 with the purple Morinda officinalis growing model. Taking advantage of the strengths of the hill garden, at the end of 2022, after careful research, Mr. Vuong invested nearly 600 million VND to improve the ground and test-plant nearly 2 hectares of this variety.

Mr. Vuong said: "The profit from growing purple Morinda officinalis is many times higher than other crops on the same area. Although still in the experimental stage, purple Morinda officinalis has shown positive signs: suitable for local soil and climate; plants grow well. According to calculations, 1 hectare of more than 20,000 plants, if each plant reaches a weight of 1.5 - 2 kg and the selling price of fresh tubers ranges from 120,000 - 140,000 VND/kg, 1 hectare of Morinda officinalis can bring in billions of VND in revenue for growers."

Nearly 2 hectares of purple sanchi plants of Mr. Vuong are growing well.

As a mountainous border commune with an area of over 533 km2 , Vu Quang identifies garden and hill economy as a strength and "lever" to promote economic development.

Over the years, the local government has developed many projects and policies on developing the hill garden economy. After the policy was widely disseminated to the people, combined with the maximum facilitation of the locality, people have had more motivation and confidence to develop the hill garden and forest garden economy. For households with forest land, people have also done a good job of protecting natural forests, protecting and regenerating forests...

Vu Quang commune has built 531 economic models with income of 100 million VND/year.

Up to now, the whole commune has built 531 models of cultivation and livestock raising with income of 100 million VND/year or more, distributed widely throughout the villages. This development not only promotes the household economy but also creates jobs for many local workers.

Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Hang - Head of the Economic Department of Vu Quang Commune said: "Developing the hill garden economy is a major policy. In recent years, the locality has had many incentive policies such as supporting loans, opening technical training courses, and introducing high-yield varieties into production. Thanks to people knowing how to apply science and technology, many models have achieved high profits, effectively exploiting land potential, opening up a legitimate and sustainable way to get rich for people in border areas".
