Focus on APEC 2027 project

With great determination, An Giang province is implementing 21 key projects to serve the conference according to Decision No. 948/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister. Among these, the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project is one of three key non-budget projects, with a total capital of nearly 22,000 billion VND. On the large construction site, more than 500 workers are working continuously under the scorching sun, urgently completing items from Terminal T2, VIP Terminal to ground infrastructure.

Mr. Truong Van Lan - Commander of Coteccons Company, the construction unit of Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project, said: “This is a challenging project. With more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry, we mobilized a team of experienced engineers from all over the country, prepared abundant equipment sources, and even invested in many new machines. At the same time, we built a residential area to ensure the lives of workers on the island, creating favorable conditions for mobilizing human resources. The goal is to complete the reinforced concrete structure in January 2026, install the steel structure and hand over the entire project by the end of 2026, in time for trial operation before APEC 2027”.

The simultaneous construction work is combined with geological survey, mass pile driving, leveling, clearing, fence erection, etc. to save maximum time. Construction progress is closely monitored every day, every hour. Specialized security forces strictly control vehicles and equipment entering and leaving, ensuring absolute security and safety under continuous construction conditions day and night, with a large number of workers.

At the same time, the APEC Conference Center project - where the official meeting and reception of economic leaders is expected to take place - is also under construction. More than 590 workers are focusing on the foundation, technical wells, water collection system and service roads, all of which are in accordance with the highest technical and aesthetic standards.

Mr. Bui Trinh - in charge of safety at Fountech Joint Stock Company, part of the APEC 2027 Conference Center project, shared: "We ensure that all staff and workers are fully equipped with protective gear, ready to cope with unpredictable rainy and windy weather. The construction site has enough medical equipment to handle illnesses, accidents, and provide health care and safety for workers."

To serve strategic projects, An Giang province issued 9 emergency construction orders, allocated more than 1,465 billion VND from the local budget and proposed the Central Government to support an additional 9,172 billion VND. In 2025 alone, it is expected to allocate more than 2,700 billion VND to accelerate the project. As of mid-July 2025, the province has selected investors for 3 off-budget projects, with a total capital of nearly 91,548 billion VND. In addition to the airport, other projects are also urgently completing procedures and construction. Phu Quoc Economic Zone Management Board and departments and branches coordinate synchronously, promote site clearance, adjust planning, approve projects, select contractors - all taking place in an urgent and unified mechanism.

Mr. Bui Thanh Trung - Director of Sun Group Corporation in the Southern region, the investor of 3 projects serving APEC 2027 emphasized: “We have carefully prepared from the design, legal to human and material resources. With the special mechanism allowed by the Central and local governments, Sun Group aims to complete the airport project in 18 months - a big challenge. Together with the projects approved for investment, we are confident that we will meet the schedule to serve APEC 2027”.

The combination of the strong direction of the provincial leaders, the efforts of investors and the perseverance of thousands of workers is creating an unprecedentedly strong construction momentum in Phu Quoc special economic zone. Amidst the scorching sun, dust and the sound of machinery, everyone is working towards a common goal: Turning Phu Quoc into an international event center with a new, modern, unique and professional look, ready to welcome the APEC Summit 2027.
