At noon on May 25th, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences) - announced that an earthquake had just occurred in Kon Tum province.
Accordingly, at 11:57 AM on May 25th, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kon Plông district (Kon Tum province), with a focal depth of approximately 8.1 km. The natural disaster risk level is 0.
The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor this earthquake.
At 1:56 AM on May 25th, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Nam Tra My district (bordering Kon Plong district), with a focal depth of approximately 8.1 km. This earthquake did not cause any natural disaster risks.
On May 23rd, two earthquakes, both measuring 2.6 magnitude, also occurred in Kon Plông district (Kon Tum province), causing no damage.
From April 2021 to the present, hundreds of earthquakes have occurred in Kon Tum, concentrated in the Kon Plông district, with some earthquakes causing widespread tremors.
The largest earthquake occurred at noon on July 28, 2024, with a magnitude of 5, preceded by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake on August 23, 2022.
According to Mr. Xuan Anh, "earthquake-triggered seismic activity" is the cause of the earthquakes in Kon Tum province in recent years.
"According to preliminary studies, earthquakes in Kon Tum are predicted to continue in the near future, but are unlikely to exceed 5.5 magnitude. However, more detailed studies are still needed to assess seismic activity in this area," Mr. Xuan Anh stated.
In Vietnam, earthquakes with magnitudes of 2-3 and 3-4 are considered weak earthquakes.
When earthquakes of magnitude 2-3 occur, some people feel very slight tremors that do not cause damage to buildings. The average frequency worldwide is over 1 million earthquakes per year.
When an earthquake of magnitude 3-4 occurs, some people will feel it, but it rarely causes damage and they may notice objects in their homes shaking. Approximately over 100,000 earthquakes occur worldwide each year.
