According to the Department of Construction of Dong Thap, recently, many roads in the province have been deeply flooded and have slow drainage. In addition, many roads have exceeded their operating period and have not been invested in building a longitudinal drainage system, causing water to accumulate on the roadbed and surface, leading to rapid deterioration, causing many sections of the road to be deformed, damaged, and have potholes. Some sections of the road along rivers, canals, and ditches have also been affected by floodwaters, causing subsidence and landslides of the roadside, affecting the safety and stability of the project.
In addition, the recent increase in heavy vehicle traffic, combined with adverse weather conditions, has caused widespread and more serious damage to roadbeds and surfaces. This has rapidly reduced the lifespan of road structures, making it difficult for vehicles to travel, and potentially posing a risk to traffic safety.

Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Dong Thap province Nguyen Cu Trinh said that, as a management agency, the Department of Construction has tried and made efforts to closely monitor the actual situation of the national highways and provincial roads under its management. The information reflected by the press and people has contributed to supporting the Department of Construction in closely monitoring and updating the situation and promptly and proactively implementing plans to overcome and repair damages to ensure compliance with actual requirements.
However, due to the continuous unfavorable weather conditions as mentioned above, many roads are always in a state of stagnant water and wetness, leading to the inability to carry out timely maintenance, patching and repair of damage on the roads according to the prescribed technical requirements. For the patching items using asphalt concrete and asphalt must be carried out in dry road surface conditions to ensure quality.
Along with that, with a large area and a large road system managed by the Department of Construction, with a total of 50 provincial roads with a length of 897 km, along with 5 national highways passing through, 279 km long. Therefore, the organization of repair in conditions of continuous and prolonged heavy rain leads to many difficulties and is not timely.

According to the Dong Thap Department of Construction, from now until the end of 2025, the department will focus on directing management and maintenance units to implement key tasks to promptly detect arising damages and carry out maintenance, patching, and repairs to basically ensure smooth, convenient, and safe traffic.
Specifically, strengthen road patrols and road inspections to record and grasp the actual situation; review and monitor sections and areas that are frequently flooded, deeply flooded, eroded, and severely damaged on roads. Level the roadside to create natural drainage, and temporarily fill in low-lying, "potholes" and "elephant holes" damaged areas. Immediately organize the handling and complete repair to ensure technical requirements as soon as the weather conditions are favorable. Along with that, provide information and install warning signs; arrange barriers and guide people in potentially dangerous areas; organize forces to respond to high tides and promptly handle arising incidents.

The Department of Construction has also requested the People's Committees of communes and wards to coordinate in implementing many measures, such as: Strengthening propaganda to people to ensure traffic safety in complicated conditions of heavy rain and high tides; checking, warning, and temporarily repairing flooded areas and damaged roads that pose potential risks to traffic safety...
Mr. Nguyen Cu Trinh added that in the long term, the Department of Construction will continue to review and develop a plan for the list of traffic works to be repaired in the coming time. Thereby, the Department will report to the competent authority to propose capital allocation for investment in new construction or upgrading and renovation combined with the addition of drainage systems along sections of roads that are often congested and flooded with the aim of maintaining and increasing the life of road works, ensuring smooth, convenient and safe traffic.
