On April 26, at the event “A Million Bright Eyes,” Dr. Dinh Thi Phuong Thuy - Executive Director of Dong Do Hospital said that doctors from the hospital's charity project “Free your eyes” examined and performed free surgery for more than 500 cases with eye problems, cataracts, refractive errors... in difficult circumstances.
The charity project “Free your eyes” sponsors 100% of the cost of surgery for eye diseases such as: Refractive errors, strabismus, cataracts, congenital eye diseases, conjunctivitis... for especially difficult circumstances, aiming to spread positive values in the field of community eye care.
Like the case of Do Minh Quan (born in 2024), the son of Do Van Truong and Lo Thi Hoa in Hoa Binh . Both of them are visually impaired. During a general health check-up, they were shocked to discover that their son had congenital cataracts when he was only 2 months old.
Mr. Truong's family in the highlands is also very poor and does not have the financial means to treat their child. Knowing the family's story, doctors at Dong Do Eye Hospital accepted the child's case and performed surgery early.
The surgery was successful. Now, Minh Quan with bright eyes opens a new future, where he can freely explore the world .
Patient Vu Quynh Anh (18 years old, Thanh Hoa) has a white cataract, can only distinguish light and dark. Since childhood, Quynh Anh has had to deal with diabetes, leading to serious complications that directly affect her eyes.
Quynh Anh confided that she gave up on eye surgery and treatment because her family was poor and had no money, and she felt sorry for her mother’s hardship. But deep down, she still longed to have bright eyes so she could go to school and study like her peers… After receiving free treatment and surgery at the hospital, her eyes were clear again.
Doctor Dinh Thi Phuong Thuy said that these are just 2 of hundreds of cases of children with eye disabilities but difficult family circumstances that doctors have decided to sponsor for free surgery. The hospital has received thousands of registrations with different stories and difficult circumstances. Each application is a hope, a dream to see the light of life clearly.
In Vietnam, there are currently about 2 million blind and visually impaired people, 1/3 of whom are poor and disadvantaged. Based on the patient records sent in, the hospital will select cases with difficult circumstances to sponsor 100% of the surgery costs.
The charity project “Free your eyes” - Freedom for the eyes has been implemented by the hospital since 2022. In addition to children, the project targets lonely elderly people, or elderly people in difficult circumstances with eye diseases to bring light, helping them to take care of themselves.
Over the years, the Project's doctors have also organized many meaningful volunteer trips to remote areas such as Son La, Ha Giang, Cao Bang... to provide free eye examinations for nearly 10,000 people, promptly providing necessary medical support, helping people access modern, specialized eye care services.
Also on the same day, Dong Do Eye Hospital received the title of Asia's Leading Unit in the number of successful SmartSight surgeries (the world's leading nearsightedness correction technology). This marks the second consecutive year the hospital has achieved this certification./.
