Don't underestimate persistent hiccups.

Persistent hiccups can be a sign of several underlying medical conditions. Recognizing triggers and understanding when to seek medical attention will help manage hiccups effectively and protect overall health.

Most cases of hiccups are harmless and go away on their own. However, if hiccups last longer than 48 hours or recur frequently, it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as a digestive disorder, nerve irritation, or, more rarely, problems related to the brain and central nervous system, according to the Times of India .

How do hiccups occur?

Hiccups occur when the diaphragm—the main muscle that helps with breathing, located at the base of the lungs—contracts involuntarily. This contraction causes air to be inhaled quickly, but it is immediately blocked as the vocal cords close.

Hiccups are often caused by very familiar everyday factors such as: eating too quickly, eating too much, drinking alcohol, carbonated drinks, eating food that is too hot or spicy. Emotional factors such as stress, excitement, or anxiety can also cause hiccups.

For most people, hiccups are short-lived and can be treated with simple home remedies, such as holding your breath, breathing into a paper bag; stimulating the vagus nerve (the nerve connecting the brain and stomach) by taking a sip of cold water, rinsing your mouth with cold water, gently pulling your tongue, or gently rubbing the eye area while your eyes are closed.

When can hiccups be a serious sign?

Hiccups lasting longer than 48 hours can be a sign of an underlying health problem and require prompt medical attention. Prolonged hiccups can disrupt sleep, affect eating habits, and significantly reduce quality of life. Additionally, they can lead to secondary problems such as weight loss, dehydration, exhaustion, or acid reflux.

In severe cases, chronic hiccups can even contribute to heart rhythm disturbances, chest pain, or shortness of breath, making early diagnosis especially important. Notably, they can sometimes be a sign of serious medical conditions, including:

Neurological causes : Brain or nerve damage, such as from a stroke or Wallenberg syndrome, can disrupt the hiccup reflex and cause persistent hiccups.

Heart and lung diseases : Myocardial infarction, pneumonia, or pleuritis can irritate the nerves that control the diaphragm, leading to hiccups.

Cancer : Some cancer patients experience hiccups due to the tumor compressing the diaphragm or as a side effect of medication.

Digestive system disorders : Pancreatitis, esophageal irritation, infection, or esophageal dilation can also be associated with hiccups.

If hiccups last for more than a month, the patient should see a doctor for evaluation. Early diagnosis helps identify the underlying cause and choose the appropriate treatment. Treatment options may include medication such as chlorpromazine, nerve blocks, or, in rare cases, surgical intervention.
