Ba Ria - Vung Tau The project "Supplementing diesel power source in Con Dao in 2023" at An Hoi power plant (Con Dao) with a total capacity of 6,400 kW was just inaugurated on the morning of February 8 (29th of Tet).

According to the original plan, the construction period of the project was from September 6, 2023 to March 6, 2024. With the efforts of the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), Ba Ria-Vung Tau Power Company (PC BR-VT) and the joint venture of contractors Tam Thanh Phat Company - Thanh Loi Construction Company Limited, the project was completed and put into use 30 days ahead of schedule, in time to serve the locality during Tet.

With a cluster of 4 generators with a capacity of 1,600 kW each, the project has added an additional 6,400 kW of power generation, raising the diesel power generation capacity of the electricity industry in Con Dao district to 15,720 kW, with an available capacity of about 13,000 kW.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Le Van Phong, Secretary of the District Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Dao District, said that the project's operation will help reduce difficulties in supplying electricity on the island. The project will contribute to increasing the operational and backup power source for socio -economic development, providing electricity for social security and national defense in Con Dao District, until the completion of the underground cable project to bring the national grid to the island.

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Duc, General Director of EVNSPC, said that Con Dao has now been supplemented with backup power, basically meeting the production and living needs of the people on the island. However, the electricity industry still hopes that the local government will continue to accompany and call on customers and businesses to have many solutions to use electricity safely and economically, especially in the upcoming hot season.

Mr. Duc also suggested that the local government consider, limit, and not allow massive load development until Con Dao is supplied with electricity from the national grid through the 110 kV submarine cable line that is being invested in to limit increasing losses for the electricity industry. In fact, the cost of running diesel generators is often twice as high as the electricity price. He said that recently, the electricity industry has had to compensate for an average annual loss of 150 billion VND due to running diesel generators in Con Dao.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of PC BR-VT, said that the unit received the power grid of Con Dao district in 2014 with a commercial output of 8.82 million kWh/year. By 2022, the commercial electricity output had reached 32.44 million kWh, the average growth rate in the period 2014-2022 was 14.71%. In 2023, the commercial output of Con Dao district reached 36.32 million kWh, an increase of 11.98% compared to 2022.

Since receiving the power grid handover in Con Dao district from the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province at the end of 2014, the electricity sector has applied the electricity price for the island district equal to the electricity price on the mainland, contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of the island district, at the same time causing the demand for electricity during this period to increase very high (average from 17-20%/year). From 2015 - 2022, the electricity sector has invested in adding 5 diesel generators, each with 1,500 kW to meet the electricity demand of the islanders.
