What is gout and what causes it?

Gout is a metabolic disorder that occurs when the body accumulates too much uric acid - the end product of the breakdown of purines in food. When uric acid levels in the blood increase, urate salt crystals deposit in the joints, causing inflammation and pain.

The disease is common in men over 40 years old, especially those with unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

Alcohol abuse increases the risk of gout.

Main causes of gout:

Increased uric acid production : Common in people who drink a lot of beer and alcohol, especially beer, due to its high purine content.

Reduced renal excretion of uric acid : Occurs in people with chronic kidney disease or taking certain medications that affect kidney function.

High purine diet : Regularly eating red meat, animal organs, seafood, etc. increases the risk of disease.

Therefore, men - the group with the habit of drinking more beer and alcohol, are often the most susceptible to gout.

Nutrition for gout patients

When treating gout, patients need to maintain a scientific diet: provide enough energy, limit animal protein, avoid being overweight but do not let the body lack nutrients.

Foods to limit:

Foods rich in purines : Animal organs (liver, brain, testicles), meat broth, anchovies, herring, sardines, tuna, mushrooms, asparagus.

Alcoholic beverages and stimulants : Beer, wine, coffee, tea - all increase uric acid in the blood.

According to recommendations, the amount of purine intake into the body each day should be less than 500 mg to limit the risk of gout recurrence.

Foods that can be eaten in moderation:

Cereals, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, sugar.

Small amounts of lean meat, fish, poultry or beans.

Fat should come from vegetable oils (olive, sesame, soybean) instead of animal fat or animal skin.

Foods to increase:

Green vegetables and whole grains: Help purify the body and reduce uric acid.

Foods rich in vitamin C: Oranges, grapefruit, pomegranates… to help reduce uric acid.

Eat a light diet, increase green vegetables, whole grains, beans and bean products such as tofu, soy milk, and supplement with milk and eggs appropriately.

Gout is a disease that can be well controlled if the patient adheres to a reasonable diet and lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, limiting alcohol, combined with a balanced diet, will help reduce the frequency of recurrence and improve the quality of life for people with gout.
