The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia’s tourism industry is entering a new chapter, with the launch of MaiA (Meticulous Artificial Intelligence of Indonesia) – a tourist-centric artificial intelligence system, introduced by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism as part of the country’s priority Tourism 5.0 program.

The launch of MaiA is part of the Indonesian government ’s commitment to building a smart, inclusive and sustainable tourism ecosystem. MaiA is not just a technological innovation, but also represents a new spirit in Indonesia’s tourism offerings.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana introduces the MaiA artificial intelligence application, a tourist-focused platform under the Tourism 5.0 program.

Through its existing Indonesia.Travel platform, MaiA is designed to connect travelers more intelligently with destinations, experiences, and services across Indonesia. MaiA acts as a digital “travel companion” that understands travelers’ needs, inspires travel, and creates instant itineraries that help travelers explore Indonesia with more confidence and ease. By integrating AI into the trip planning and actual decision-making process, the app will support seamless trips while providing travelers with easy access to timely and relevant information.

The technology is expected to be a smart manager and digital travel companion, through a series of core features: Personalized destination recommendations, tailored to user preferences and behaviors; automated itinerary generation that allows travelers to build and adjust routes on the fly; interactive maps that help travelers navigate destinations more easily and confidently; destination information summaries in multiple languages, supporting international source markets and improving accessibility.

With these outstanding features, MaiA is seen as a central interface between Indonesian tourism services and global travelers, while providing a framework for future integrations with industry partners.

For Indonesia, developing AI in the tourism industry through MaiA is a strategy to meet the changing expectations of global travelers, reflecting the growing demand of travelers to seek personalized, efficient and accessible travel experiences across digital channels.

MaiA’s presence is expected to enhance Indonesia’s international competitiveness, complementing physical infrastructure and developing destinations with smarter, data-driven services. At the same time, MaiA supports the government’s efforts to develop sustainable, user-friendly tourism by integrating digital tools with broader policy goals of inclusiveness and resilience. MaiA is expected to deliver tangible added value to visitors, while strengthening Indonesia’s position as an innovative and relevant destination in an increasingly competitive global tourism landscape.

The Indonesian government has identified the Tourism Ecosystem Program 5.0 as a national priority, with MaiA as the core platform that shows that Indonesian tourism AI will be developed within a broader collaborative ecosystem, rather than just as a standalone tool.

By combining adaptive AI, traveler-centric design, and a sustainability-focused policy framework, MaiA is expected to become a key pillar of Indonesia’s tourism industry. It will distribute and manage travel experiences – supporting both the country’s digital transformation agenda and the industry’s shift towards smarter, more responsible growth.
