In early December, when the weather enters the changing seasons, Ky Quan San - a mountain peak over 3,000 m high located between Lao Cai and Lai Chau , puts on a rare, brilliant beauty.

The maple forests on the mountain slopes begin to change color, creating a red-orange patch that stands out against the green forest typical of the Northwest, attracting many tourists from all over to come and see it with their own eyes.

From the foot of the mountain in Sang Ma Sao commune ( Lao Cai ), groups of people with backpacks follow one another along the red dirt road leading into the forest. The morning air is slightly cold and misty, but the early morning sunlight shining through the treetops makes the scene clear.

According to locals, the period from October to April of the following year is the best time to climb Ky Quan San because there is little rain, dry roads and clear views. In December, the maple forest changes color, making the mountain a top-rated destination.

“It’s not every year that the leaves are this bright red. The weather has been clear these past few days, with lots of clouds in the morning, so the scenery is very beautiful. Tourists climb mainly to capture that moment,” said a resident of Sang Ma Sao commune (Lao Cai).

From an altitude of over 2,000 meters, visitors begin to see the change in the landscape. Tall maple trees rise up in the middle of the forest, their leaves changing color from light yellow to dark red. Many people take the opportunity to take a few photos as the sunlight shines through the foliage, creating a brilliant color scheme that is rarely found anywhere else in the region.

The journey to the top of Ky Quan San is not easy. The terrain is steep, slippery in many places and requires clinging to tree roots to get through. The higher you go, the colder the wind gets, the temperature at night can drop below 5ºC, even freezing on cloudy days. Therefore, climbers often bring thermal clothing, gloves and flashlights to ensure safety.

Near the 3,046 m peak, a thick sea of clouds appeared, rolling over the mountain ridges like white waves. The early morning sunlight gradually dyed the clouds a pale yellow, creating a hazy scene that left many people unable to hide their astonishment.

Nguyen Hoai Anh, a tourist from Hanoi , said this was the first time he had seen such a scene. “I have been to many places to hunt clouds but have never seen such a vast sea of clouds. Combined with the red leaf forest below, it was truly impressive. The climb was a bit difficult but this moment made me feel that all the effort was worth it,” Phuong said.

Looking down from the top of Ky Quan San, the entire space opens up with the red color of maple forests, the green color of mountains and the white sea of clouds.

The red leaf season in Ky Quan San only lasts for a short time, but it is enough to turn this mountain into one of the most beautiful destinations in the Northwest at the end of the year. With the wild beauty of the old forest, challenging roads and rare natural moments, the journey to conquer this mountain peak of more than 3,000 m continues to be a memorable experience for anyone who loves trekking and exploring mountains and forests.
