Caring for billion-dollar flowers - Farmers work hard every day

Cymbidium orchids (orchid) are a popular flower in the market during the Lunar New Year and have brought high income to many farming households in the old Sa Pa town area. This year, the weather is considered favorable for the development of cymbidium orchids. With only about two months left until the Lunar New Year 2026, garden owners are focusing on taking care of each flower plant with the expectation of a high economic efficiency harvest.

Farmers focus on taking care of orchids.

After a year of hard work, farmers release the most beautiful and valuable cymbidium pots to the market right on Tet. The success or failure of the entire crop depends on this time, so this is the most important stage, requiring growers to concentrate fully and apply precise care techniques so that the plants will produce many branches and bloom right on Tet.

With more than 10 years of experience growing orchids, Mr. Ly Quoc Tri in Lu Khau village, Ta Phin commune, along with his workers, is busy taking care of the flowers. Early in the morning, when the fog has not yet cleared, the clouds are still clinging to each tree branch and blade of grass, the air is still cold and humid, Mr. Tri is already present at the orchid garden. Carefully picking grass, checking the tree roots, flower branches, and leaf stalks to see if the orchid has any strange signs, Mr. Tri will promptly "treat" the plant. Orchids often suffer from root rot, caused by heavy rain and high humidity. Luckily, this year's weather is favorable, with moderate humidity, so the orchid grows and develops well, with many branches.

Mr. Ly Quoc Tri's family's orchid garden has 700 flower pots. He plans to move all 700 orchid pots to Hanoi for sale after the New Year. Mr. Ly Quoc Tri said: "I work hard all year just waiting for the Tet flower season. I hope the weather will be favorable, the wind and rain will be favorable, the flowers will have a good price, and they will be easy to sell."

The nearly 1,000-pot cymbidium garden of Mr. Giang A Dung's family in Lu Khau village, Ta Phin commune, located in one of the highest positions of the commune, is simultaneously blooming dark green buds. Mr. Dung and his family are focusing on taking care of the plants, shaping the branches, and applying flower care techniques to ensure that the cymbidiums bloom in time for Tet. As a young person (born in 1999), Mr. Dung has mastered the technique of caring for cymbidiums from a very early age. Up to now, he has been able to handle all the basic diseases of this plant. People in the village often compare Mr. Dung's garden to a billion-dollar cymbidium garden "in the clouds" because of its beauty. To have such a large-scale cymbidium garden, in addition to consulting care techniques from households in the village, Mr. Dung is also quick to grasp through the media and social networks. According to Mr. Giang A Dung, the most important thing in cymbidium care techniques is the selection of varieties. It is necessary to choose good quality breeds to have orchid pots of high economic value.

With 8 years of experience growing cymbidiums, Mr. Chao Lao Ta in Can Ho B village, Ngu Chi Son commune, currently owns 500 flower pots. With an average selling price of about 2 million VND/pot, his family earns about 300 million VND in profit each year - a fairly stable source of income for people in the highlands. However, caring for cymbidiums is not simple. Growers must stay up late, get up early, actively monitor the weather to promptly "migrate" the orchid garden, master pest control techniques and apply methods to improve productivity and flower quality. In addition, they also face risks from climate change and market fluctuations.

Cymbidium gives growers a stable income.

In the communes of the old Sa Pa town, about 100,000 pots of cymbidium orchids are supplied to the market each year. This flower is favored by consumers thanks to its pure beauty, high flower durability and significance during Tet. Compared to other crops, cymbidium orchids are affirmed to be a crop with high economic value; if stable, many families can earn billions of dong each year from cymbidium orchids. Therefore, caring for cymbidium orchids in the sensitive period before Tet is given special attention by farmers, with the expectation that in the 2026 Tet season, cymbidium orchids will have good prices and bring in high income.
