Not only is the price decreasing, but farmers are also facing many difficulties in selling coconuts, and the income of gardeners has decreased sharply at the present time.
Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hong, Binh Ninh commune, Dong Thap province, who cultivates more than 1 hectare of coconut, said that currently, traders are purchasing Siamese coconuts in the garden for about 40,000 VND to 60,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits), half the price compared to more than a month ago.
Mr. Le Minh Thanh, from Cho Gao commune, has 3,000 square meters of Malay coconuts about 6 years old. He said that since the beginning of the year, he usually sells them for over 100,000 VND/dozen; even when coconuts are scarce, he sells them for 130,000 VND/dozen. However, the current price is only 45,000 VND/dozen and traders are buying quite sparingly.
According to traders who specialize in buying green coconuts in Dong Thap province, currently, the source of green coconuts is very abundant, almost every garden is producing a lot of fruit because of favorable weather. However, the export situation is not very positive, the domestic market is also consuming very slowly because it is the rainy season so the demand is not much.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phu, a coconut trader in Cho Gao area, Dong Thap province, said that unlike the situation a month ago, coconuts are now abundant but we can only buy them for 45,000 VND. For export, grade 1 green coconuts can only be bought for 60,000 VND/dozen.
According to records in many communes in Dong Thap province, compared to more than a month ago, the price of fresh coconuts in the province has decreased by about half, to about 40,000 VND - 60,000 VND/dozen.
Dong Thap is focusing on developing coconut trees, especially dwarf coconut trees, to increase income for people and convert ineffective rice-growing areas. Recently, farmers in Dong Thap province have focused on monoculture or intercropping coconut trees, causing the area of this tree to continuously increase. In some localities in the province, farmers have cut down ineffective fruit orchards to switch to coconut or intercropping coconut trees in other gardens.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the whole province currently has over 24,113 hectares of coconut, with an output of 203,770 tons. Experts recommend that farmers be cautious when expanding the coconut growing area, especially in areas with soil conditions not suitable for this type of tree to avoid oversupply in the coming time; at the same time, it is necessary to focus on applying science and technology to production to increase productivity and quality of coconuts, meeting export demand.
