India's rice exports may increase sharply by 16%

India – the world’s largest rice exporter – is on track to set a new record in 2025/26 thanks to abundant domestic production and a strong recovery in exports.

The Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) forecasts exports to rise 16% to 23.5 million tonnes, surpassing 20.2 million tonnes in 2024-25 and approaching the record 22.35 million tonnes in 2022-23. Exports had previously fallen sharply to 16.35 million tonnes in 2023-24 due to the government imposing trade restrictions to secure domestic supplies as global prices soared.

After the lifting of these measures last year, rice exports have bounced back, rising 23.4%, according to data from the Directorate General of Commercial Information & Statistics (DGCIS). The current momentum has led exporters to believe that India could reach an unprecedented 30 million tonnes by 2026-27.

This target is entirely feasible thanks to market expansion and increased processing capacity, said IREF Vice President Dev Garg. IREF, which represents over 7,500 businesses, plays a role in promoting India's rice export strategy in the context of global rice consumption continuing to increase.
