Latest durian price news
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, at a workshop on the sustainable development of the durian industry held on the morning of June 10, Vietnam's durian exports are facing many difficulties. It is forecasted that durian export turnover will reach about 2.1 billion USD and 3.2 billion USD in 2023 and 2024. However, in the first four months of 2025, the total export value only reached 183 million USD, a sharp decrease of 60.9% compared to the same period last year. Notably, in the Chinese market, the export turnover only reached 105.7 million USD, a decrease of 75.5%.
Mr. Nguyen pointed out that the cadmium and yellow O issues in durian have exposed the fundamental weaknesses of this industry, which has developed too quickly. Specifically, the industry has difficulty controlling the entire supply chain, from input materials to cultivation and post-harvest processing. In addition, production focused on quantity and lax management in the use of growing area codes and packaging facilities are also the main causes of this situation.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), said that the Ministry had organized a large conference to warn about the potential risks caused by the excessive growth of the durian industry. Regarding the issue of cadmium, after receiving the first notification from China in March 2024, the Department conducted many extensive investigations and discovered some areas with high cadmium content. Mr. Hieu explained that the main cause of cadmium pollution is due to natural factors (soil characteristics) and continuous cultivation without rest time. Moreover, the habit of using fertilizers beyond the recommended level by people also contributes to this situation.
