Durian price news today 5/13/2025
Today, May 13, 2025, durian prices in Vietnam continue to stabilize, even showing signs of a slight decrease due to inventory pressure and export difficulties. Meanwhile, the "newbie" durian variety Tupai King is causing a fever in Malaysia and Singapore, with prices far exceeding premium varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn, opening up new opportunities for the Vietnamese durian industry.
In Malaysia, Tupai King is becoming the center of attention with a selling price of up to RM130/kg (more than USD30/kg), 8-9 times higher than Musang King and Black Thorn (RM15/kg). This durian variety is popular for its strong aroma, orange-yellow flesh, sweet and bitter taste and smooth texture. According to Mr. Eric Yeap, a fruit garden owner in Penang, demand from Singapore, China and Hong Kong is very high, with customers even willing to order a month in advance. However, Tupai King production is still limited, only about 200 trees on 53.4 hectares, not enough to meet demand.
Despite expectations of reaching an export turnover of 1 billion USD in 2025, Vietnamese durian only achieved 20% of the plan in the first 4 months of the year. China has strengthened quarantine control and regulations on preservatives, making it difficult for businesses to process and package, leading to inventory and a decrease in domestic prices. Experts have proposed improving processing capacity, building growing areas that meet GlobalGAP standards, and boosting frozen durian exports to reduce dependence on the Chinese market.
With supply exceeding demand and exports not yet picking up, durian prices in Vietnam may remain stable or decrease slightly in the next few days. However, the emergence of Tupai King in the international market is a positive signal, encouraging Vietnam to invest in specialty varieties to diversify the market and improve its export position.
