BHG - Every year, from January to July, the water in Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir recedes, leaving behind flat, bare alluvial lands with fertile alluvium from the Gam River. Taking advantage of these land areas, people in Yen Phu town and the communes of Lac Nong, Yen Phong, Yen Dinh, Thuong Tan, Minh Ngoc (Bac Me) take advantage of the opportunity to grow corn, contributing to increasing their income.
Bac Me district is blessed with a dense river system, especially the gentle Gam river flowing through the district. In the dry season, the riverside alluvial plains with fertile alluvial soil have become important farming areas, including corn, a staple food crop in the local crop structure. To ensure a harvest, before the water rises, households have chosen short-term hybrid corn varieties with high yields and local glutinous corn varieties. Many people said that growing corn on this land does not require fertilization, but only requires plowing to loosen the soil, sowing seeds, and then periodically weeding. The corn grows very well and yields higher than in other places, because the alluvial soil is rich in nutrients. In addition, Bac Me district promotes propaganda and mobilization of people to review the planting area; proactively take measures to prevent and control pests and diseases; apply scientific and technical advances in production; product consumption link…
The corn area planted on alluvial land grows and develops well and will be harvested in late June and early July. |
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyet, Na Vin village, Yen Phu town, shared: Taking advantage of the alluvial land area along the Gam River during the flood season, this year my family planted about 4.6 hectares of corn. Because the alluvial land has a lot of alluvium, there is no need to use fertilizer, the corn still grows and develops well; it is expected that by the end of June, early July 2025, the corn area will be ready for harvest.
Similarly, Mr. Nong Van Vuong, Na Pau village, Lac Nong commune, said: This year, my family planted more than 3 hectares of short-term hybrid corn, and the corn is currently growing and developing well. Hopefully this year the rain and wind will be favorable so that my family can harvest the entire corn area because in 2024, due to heavy rain and rising water levels, part of the corn area will be flooded and will not be harvested in time.
According to the professional sector of Bac Me district, this year, people planted corn on the alluvial land of Gam River with a total area of over 162 hectares, of which: Yen Phu town planted about 15.5 hectares; Lac Nong commune planted nearly 8.5 hectares; Thuong Tan planted about 1 hectare; Yen Phong planted over 53 hectares; Yen Dinh and Minh Ngoc planted over 42 hectares. Planting corn on the alluvial land of Gam River not only contributes to ensuring food security but also helps Bac Me people increase their income and improve their lives. However, planting corn on the alluvial land of Gam River also faces a number of challenges such as pests and diseases, especially the complicated climate, heavy rainfall, which can easily cause flooding. Therefore, people may lose the entire corn area if they do not carefully calculate the planting time and harvest on time. At the same time, people are advised to monitor the weather and absolutely ensure human safety during the production process.
