Cambodian durian is in high demand, Chinese market is growing strongly
In Stung Trang district, Kampong Cham province (Cambodia), durian cultivation is developing rapidly as people continue to expand their cultivation areas because of the high profit and great export potential of this fruit. According to information from the local government, the durian cultivation area has now exceeded 2,000 hectares and is expected to increase to about 2,500 hectares next year.
Although rubber remains the main crop in the region, durian is increasingly gaining importance thanks to favorable climatic conditions and increasing market demand. Many farmers earn tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars per crop. Some have even boldly expanded their planting areas to take advantage of export opportunities, especially to the Chinese market – a market that the Cambodian government is actively exploiting.
In addition, durian gardens here also attract many tourists and domestic consumers who prefer organic products. However, the problem of origin fraud and the use of chemicals to fake Cambodian durian is a major challenge that needs to be solved.
Authorities have conducted strict inspections at wholesale markets and border gates. With the determination to build a durian brand and develop a modern farming community, Cambodia is gradually consolidating its position in the Southeast Asian fruit market.
