According to Chinese Customs data, China imported only 23,000 tons of durian in the first two months of 2025, a sharp decrease of 56.7% compared to the same period last year. The import value also dropped by more than 57.3%, equivalent to 119 million USD.

Despite being the market that consumes 91% of the global durian, China is tightening its inspection policy, especially for shipments from Vietnam and Thailand.

In this context, Laos is emerging as a new source. Attapeu provincial authorities have licensed three companies to grow durian on an area of 273 hectares, aiming to officially export to China within the next 30 years.

Not only Laos, Indonesia is also rushing to complete the requirements from the General Administration of Customs of China, opening up export possibilities this year.

Although durian production in Vietnam remains large, increasingly stringent chemical residue and cadmium testing and traceability requirements are major barriers to maintaining market share in China.

In that context, experts recommend that farmers need to ensure production according to VietGAP process, use standard fertilizers and proactively test before harvest to avoid risks.
