In another development, the European hot-rolled coil market continues to be under pressure due to weak demand, oversupply and falling prices. However, HRC prices are expected to recover in the second half of the year.
According to World Steel Dynamics (WSD), HRC prices may test a new bottom of EUR 570–580/t in the coming period, due to sluggish demand, fierce competition among producers and large import offers.
Currently, HRC prices in Northern Europe have dropped to EUR 590–610/t EXW (ex-works), while in Southern Europe they are EUR 570–590/t EXW. Imports from third countries have also become cheaper, with Italian offers down EUR 20 and hovering around EUR 480–500/t CIF.
According to market sources, customer buying activity remains low. Buyers are avoiding new orders, expecting prices to fall further. Service centers in Italy are overstocked and buying selectively.
Manufacturers across Europe are cutting prices to fill order books. But even aggressive pricing policies are failing to spur new deals.
However, WSD sees a potential market reversal in the fall. Positive factors could include a trade deal between the US and the EU; declining steel production in China; and CBAM costs being passed on to prices in the fourth quarter.
In another development, in Spain, the Unesid Association has called for support for the country's metallurgical industry amid the difficult situation. This content was presented at the association's annual congress.
Bernardo Velázquez, President of Unesid, stressed that despite some signs of recovery in production and consumption, the Spanish steel industry is still facing difficulties due to unfavorable conditions in the international market, rising energy costs, the rapid green transition and competition from third countries.
The association calls for a more ambitious European industrial policy, predictable energy prices, and a fairer regulatory framework. Without these, strategic autonomy in key areas such as energy, defence and infrastructure would be threatened. In addition, Unesid proposes an effective and sustainable trade defence instrument.
