Pepper price today October 16, 2025: Temporarily stopping the downward trend

After 9 months of 2025, Vietnam's pepper export value will reach nearly 1.3 billion USD, becoming one of the country's billion-dollar agricultural products. However, pepper is facing major challenges in crop varieties. Diseases and climate change make maintaining productivity and quality increasingly difficult, while research and improvement of varieties have not kept up with development needs.

Global pepper prices are forecast to remain high due to reduced supply and recovering demand, helping Vietnam benefit from export value. However, the shortage of quality seeds is the biggest bottleneck, affecting the sustainable development of the entire industry.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Ngoc - Director of the Pepper Research and Development Center said that pepper is a perennial industrial plant, so the process of selecting and creating new varieties takes from 15 to 20 years. This work requires many stages of testing, productivity evaluation and stability testing. If it fails, we have to start over from the beginning, which is very costly.

The Center has now bred a number of promising varieties, both domestic and imported, but they are still in the testing phase. A new variety has been submitted to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection for registration and is expected to be recognized in 2026, opening up expectations to help the pepper industry be more proactive in varieties and improve its export position.

World pepper prices and influencing factors

In the world market, based on quotes from exporting enterprises and export prices in countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) updated the latest pepper prices as of October 16, 2025 as follows:

Indonesia’s Lampung black pepper prices remained unchanged at $7,234 per tonne. Similarly, Muntok white pepper prices remained unchanged at $10,093 per tonne.

Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged at USD 6,100/mt.

Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged at $9,500 per tonne. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price also remained unchanged at $12,500 per tonne.

Prices of all types of Vietnamese pepper have decreased sharply, of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l decreased by 200 USD/ton (down 3.13%) to 6,400 USD/ton; 550 gr/l decreased by 200 USD/ton (down 3.03%) to 6,600 USD/ton.

Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price decreased by 200 USD/ton (down 2.21%), reaching 9,050 USD/ton.

Analysts believe that the recent drop in pepper prices is mainly due to profit-taking after a period of sharp increases since August. When prices peak, many agents and traders sell to recover capital, causing short-term supply to increase, creating pressure for domestic prices to decrease slightly.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), import demand from China, India and Europe remains stable but the pace of purchases has slowed down as importers wait for lower prices. Domestically, inventories are not high, but purchasing power is weak due to a probing mentality, causing the market to temporarily stagnate.

Data from China Customs shows that in the first 8 months of 2025, the country imported 6,390 tons of pepper worth 43.4 million USD, down 14.6% in volume but up nearly 20% in value. Vietnam surpassed Indonesia to become the largest supplier with 2,572 tons, accounting for 40.2% of the market share. Vietnam's average export price reached 7,212 USD/ton, higher than Indonesia and Brazil, affirming the prestige and quality of the product.

Experts forecast that in the fourth quarter of 2025, the outlook for Vietnam’s pepper exports will remain positive thanks to increased demand from China, the US and Europe. However, the industry needs to invest heavily in varieties and production processes to maintain its competitive edge in an increasingly fierce global market.
