As coffee prices continue to rise, coffee growers are not only happy with improved incomes but also facing a new problem: the cost of hiring harvest workers has increased sharply.
Coffee picking requires workers to be in good health, skillful and understand the correct harvesting process so as not to affect the next crop. Therefore, the cost of hiring workers in many localities has increased significantly this year.
In key coffee growing regions such as Dak Lak, Gia Lai or Lam Dong, coffee picking wages are calculated by the day or by output. On average, each worker can earn from 500,000 to 1,000,000 VND/day, depending on the productivity and difficulty of the coffee garden.
Although this income level is attractive, many gardeners still face difficulties due to labor shortages during peak season, especially when most young people leave their hometowns to work in the city.
Although there are many new models such as volunteering or combining agricultural tourism, in the long term, the Vietnamese coffee industry still needs sustainable solutions on labor and mechanization to maintain productivity and quality in the context of strong fluctuations in coffee prices.
