Ha Nam commune was established on the basis of merging 4 communes Lien Mac, Thanh An, Thanh Xuan and Thanh Lang (formerly Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province). All four regions have a long tradition of growing guava, in which Lien Mac is considered the "cradle" of the Ha Nam guava brand today. From that land, guava trees have covered the fields, becoming a symbol of vitality, diligence and aspiration of the farmers here. Ha Nam commune has 1,228 hectares of guava, of which about 200 hectares meet VietGAP standards. This is the main crop that brings stable income to the people, recognized as a local 3-star OCOP product. Small-scale growers like Mr. Mac Van Loc in Ha Nam commune are excited to enter the harvest season. His family grows more than 1 sao of guava, harvesting the main crop in May and June every year. “Off-season guava is sweeter and has a good price, which is considered another bumper crop of the year,” Mr. Loc shared. The off-season harvest starts from September to the end of the year, bringing good income to guava farmers thanks to stable prices and output. Large-scale growers like Ms. Le Thi Hoa are more excited when the guava season begins. Her family grows more than 1 hectare of guava, and each day when the fruit is ripe, they can harvest 500 kg of fruit. With the garden price of 9,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, Ms. Hoa earns a good profit. "Off-season guava sells well. Traders come to the garden to buy it, so the guavas are sold out as soon as they ripen," Ms. Hoa said excitedly. Off-season guava in Ha Nam does not ripen all at once but fruits come out one after another, farmers are always busy. All over the fields, guava beds are covered with lush green, interspersed between clusters of tiny white flowers are young fruits that have just set, large fruits in bags, and ripe round fruits peeking out from behind the leaves. Although part of the guava area was affected by storm Yagi , the whole Ha Nam commune still achieved a yield of about 41,500 tons of fruit. On average, each hectare brings in an income of about 150 million VND/year. In the dry weather of late autumn, the sweet scent of guava spreads across the fields of Ha Nam, signaling the return of a bountiful guava harvest. From familiar crops, local people have created a unique local agricultural brand.DO TUAN
