Toyota has unveiled the Turbo Trail Cruiser concept – a project to “revive” the Land Cruiser FJ60 in a style that retains the classic look of the 1980s but replaces the entire powertrain with modern technology. The new heart is the Tundra’s 3.4L twin-turbocharged V6 i-Force, reaching 389 horsepower and 650 Nm, still working with the original 5-speed manual transmission thanks to a dedicated converter. The concept will appear at SEMA 2025 in Las Vegas in early November.

Retro style, modern power
True to the spirit of “old wine in new bottles”, Toyota kept the FJ60’s design DNA intact: a square body, halogen headlights, a grille with the old Land Cruiser logo, and a separate chassis. At the same time, the company replaced the entire original engine with a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 i-Force to bring performance to a new level – nearly double that of the original FJ60, according to Toyota.
V6 i-Force from Tundra: 389 hp, 650 Nm
The Tundra’s twin-turbocharged 3.4L i-Force engine delivers 389 horsepower and 477 lb-ft. The extra power comes with twin-turbocharging for ample low-end torque – a boon on the road and in everyday driving.
Notably, this modern engine still sends power through the FJ60's original five-speed manual transmission. Toyota says engineers used a special converter to match the two generations of technology, preserving the rustic driving feel of the classic Land Cruiser.

Installation problem: modern but not invasive to the original frame
The biggest challenge was fitting the bulky V6 into the FJ60’s cramped engine bay. The Toyota Motorsports Garage team fabricated custom engine mounts, redesigned the oil pan, added a custom heat exchanger, and installed a high-performance exhaust system. The goal was to fit the entire drivetrain within the FJ60’s frame without cutting into the stock structure.
Chassis tuning: 38 mm ground clearance, 35 inch tires
To match the new power and increased off-road capability, the suspension has been raised by 38 mm, with front leaf springs swapped. Beadlock wheels combined with 35-inch tires increase grip and tire protection when running low pressure on difficult terrain.

Cabin retains classic style, adds necessary amenities
Inside, Toyota has kept the 80s-inspired layout and materials. The only significant concessions to modern users are a JBL stereo system and a central touchscreen cleverly mounted on the classic dashboard. This configuration ensures basic amenities without disrupting the original aesthetic.

Words from the project manager
“The Turbo Trail Cruiser is a testament to what happens when modern Toyota performance technology is integrated into one of our most iconic classics,” said Marty Schwerter, CEO of Toyota Motorsports Garage.
SEMA 2025 Context and Heritage Honor Strategy
The Turbo Trail Cruiser will join more than two dozen other Toyota concepts at SEMA 2025, including the Camry GT-S and Corolla Cross Hybrid Nasu. Toyota’s approach to the project is clear: honor the Land Cruiser’s heritage by keeping the classic intact, while also tapping into new powertrain technology to make it “more street-friendly and powerful,” as the company puts it.
Conclusion: FJ60 for today, the Toyota way
The Turbo Trail Cruiser concept is a marriage of classic FJ60 form with contemporary twin-turbo V6 performance. Retaining the original five-speed manual transmission and separate chassis, while adding more traction and a controlled chassis upgrade, shows that Toyota prioritizes the Land Cruiser’s signature rugged experience, but with more than enough power to handle today’s conditions. This is a true “2025 FJ60” – classic in appearance, modern in heart – and for now, it’s just a concept shown at SEMA 2025.
