Contribute to building An Lac countryside

In the morning, An Lac hamlet, Binh An commune (An Giang province) is bustling with the sound of boats docking, children going to school on concrete roads, and trucks carrying agricultural products across the new bridge. Behind this changing rhythm of life is the persistent contribution of Mr. Huynh Vinh Vo - a prestigious person in the hamlet.

Bridge, the road connecting dreams

The concrete road leading to An Lac hamlet lies in the middle of a peaceful countryside with lush green scenery. Welcoming us at the hamlet headquarters was Mr. Huynh Vinh Vo: “Only when you come to the construction site can you see how much An Lac has changed!” Many years ago, this place was still muddy in the rainy season. The makeshift wooden bridges shook every time a motorbike passed over them.

People have difficulty traveling, students are afraid to go to school when the water rises. Seeing the difficulties of the people, Mr. Vo knocked on every door, persistently mobilizing people to contribute labor, money, and materials. "I just say something simple: If you do it, you will enjoy it. In the future, if the roads are good, the bridges are strong, the children will be happy to go to school, goods will be easy to sell, and life will improve," Mr. Vo said.

From group 4 to group 5, the road is wide enough for two motorbikes to pass each other easily. We stopped in front of the New Canal Bridge, which spans an important irrigation canal. The concrete bridge is sturdy, with a solid railing. The total construction cost was 355 million VND, with Mr. Vo mobilizing support from benefactors and local people contributing labor.

Thanks to that consensus, An Lac hamlet has new roads and bridges. Up to now, Mr. Vo has mobilized over 700 million VND to build bridges and roads in the locality. Trade is smooth, trucks can come to the house to buy agricultural products, people save costs and increase income. "Mr. Vo said so I believed and followed. In the past, if I wanted to sell vegetables or fish, it was very difficult to get there. Since the new roads and bridges have been built, it is convenient to go anywhere and sell goods easily," said Mr. Nguyen Van Quoc, resident of group 4.

Not only taking care of building bridges and roads, Mr. Vo is also passionate about building a civilized and safe lifestyle in the hamlet. One of the things that people will always remember is the campaign to install public lighting along the country roads.

With his skillful way of speaking and exemplary attitude of “doing first, talking later”, he mobilized philanthropists and local people to install 17 solar-powered lamp posts, with a total cost of nearly 30 million VND.

"Thanks to the lights, traffic accidents have clearly decreased. Parents can feel secure letting their children go to extra classes at night, and people coming home late are not as afraid as before," Mr. Tran Minh Thanh, resident of Group 10, excitedly shared.

Community Engagement

Having roads and bridges is important, but what keeps the community strong is solidarity. And that is what Mr. Huynh Vinh Vo always worries about. An Lac has 488 households, of which the Kinh ethnic group accounts for 70%, Khmer 10%, and Chinese 20%.

To unite the multi-ethnic community, he often visited each house, talked intimately, and listened to people's thoughts. From small family matters to big village matters, he always tried to connect the government with the people. Policies on new rural construction, health insurance, prevention and fight against social evils... were conveyed by him in a familiar and easy-to-understand language, so people listened, believed, and followed.

Thanks to his perseverance, the emulation movements and mass mobilizations in An Lac have all achieved good results. People unite to help each other escape poverty, contribute to building social welfare projects, maintain security and order, build cultural life... all under the guidance and mobilization of Mr. Vo. 11 years ago, the hamlet had 38 poor households and 56 near-poor households, now there are only 6 poor households and 14 near-poor households.

Mr. Nguyen Van Trung - Party Cell Secretary, Head of An Lac Hamlet said: "Mr. Vo has prestige, so whatever he encourages, people follow. Thanks to him, many social welfare projects have been built and completed early, and people's lives have improved significantly. The government highly appreciates his contributions."

As the afternoon fell, the solar-powered lamps along the road leading to the hamlet gradually lit up. In Mr. Vo’s eyes, the joy was not only in the newly built bridges or the newly concreted roads, but also in the sharing and helping of the people here.

“I am preparing to start construction of the bridge connecting Group 5 and Group 6. As long as I am healthy, I will continue to work, so that people can develop their economy and their children can study well. Being loved and trusted by the people is the motivation for me to continue contributing to my homeland,” Mr. Vo confided.
