According to statistics from the authorities, the main cause of traffic accidents is still the culture of traffic participation and the limited awareness of traffic participants in complying with traffic safety regulations. On many roads in the province, it is not difficult to see behaviors of lack of awareness in driving vehicles, posing many potential safety risks.

One of the behaviors that makes many people angry and is strongly criticized by the community is the illegal stopping and parking of vehicles, jostling, and even sudden U-turns by parents when picking up and dropping off students in front of the school gate.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, a resident of Long Xuyen ward, said: “Some parents stop, park, and turn their vehicles around in front of the school gate, affecting many people and the safety of students. However, when reminded, some people still show frustration, challenge, and sometimes have uncivilized behavior. Poor awareness from adults will easily influence the formation of bad habits in young children.”

Another uncivilized behavior when participating in traffic is that at some locations where there are signs allowing two-wheeled vehicles to turn right at intersections, instead of many people in the right-turn lane having the right to continue, they are blocked by vehicles stopping at red lights that do not comply with road regulations and do not intend to give way, causing traffic jams.

Ms. Le Thi Truc Phuong, a resident of Long Xuyen ward, shared: “I often see cases where some people, in order to save a few seconds, push their way to the front when stopping at red lights, even stopping their cars on the right-turn lane, causing traffic jams. Just because a few individuals lack awareness, it affects many people.”

How to handle a collision in traffic is a concern for many people. When participating in traffic during rush hour, narrow roads, and crowded people, collisions are very likely to occur. Most good traffic participants handle the situation gently. However, there are some people who do not distinguish right from wrong, think they are right, blame and react, and curse others.

Mr. Huynh Trung Dung, a resident of Rach Gia Ward, said: “When I was driving on the road, a motorbike came from a small alley and crashed into the main road, cutting in front of my car. Luckily, I was driving slowly and reacted quickly to stop in time. However, this young man turned back and cursed me with rude words, asserting that it was my fault and continued to speed away.”

In addition, there are still some people who lack awareness of encroaching on road safety corridors, using sidewalks as places to sell goods, using the roadway as a place to dry firewood or littering, wastewater on the road... affecting traffic participants. And there are many situations, violations, and collisions while participating in traffic that take place every day, not only causing inconvenience but also posing a risk of accidents for themselves and those around them.

It can be seen that traffic culture does not only stop at strictly complying with the Road Traffic Law such as not running red lights, driving on the right side of the road, not speeding... but also gestures and actions that seem very simple but demonstrate community spirit, beautiful behavior, contributing to building a safe and civilized traffic environment. To do this, traffic participants need to eliminate wrongdoings from their thoughts such as running red lights, stopping and parking in the wrong place, encroaching on lanes, honking loudly, going the wrong way...

Traffic culture is built from the awareness of law compliance, behavior, good actions, and good deeds of each citizen when participating in traffic. Traffic culture plays an important role in reducing traffic accidents. Therefore, each citizen raising their awareness and responsibility when participating in traffic will contribute to building a safe and civilized society.
