Floodwaters breached dikes, destroying hundreds of hectares of rice paddies.

According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, as of October 28th, nearly 830 hectares of rice, fruit trees, and vegetables in the province have been damaged. This includes nearly 630 hectares of rice (605 hectares 100% damaged, 22 hectares 50-60% damaged); over 107 hectares of fruit trees (nearly 105 hectares 100% damaged, 2.5 hectares 40-50% damaged); and nearly 86 hectares of vegetables and short-term crops 100% damaged. In addition, nearly 9,300 hectares are potentially affected.

Given the rapidly rising floodwaters, and the threat to rice cultivation in some communes in the Dong Thap Muoi region, the People's Committees of these communes have proactively deployed forces and coordinated with the people to reinforce flood control dikes.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment organized inspection teams in coordination with local authorities to assess flood damage, and requested the People's Committees of communes and wards in the Dong Thap Muoi region to urgently implement flood response plans, ready to mobilize local forces, equipment, and supplies to promptly handle the situation.

People proactively reinforced dikes to protect their rice crops.

At the same time, inspect, review, and specifically identify the locations of vulnerable dikes and embankments at risk of failure; understand the number of households living in areas potentially affected by flooding, the area of agricultural production outside the dikes and embankments, and areas where dikes are not yet closed, are low, or do not ensure flood protection, in order to proactively implement timely response measures.

In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has submitted a document to the Provincial People's Committee requesting approval for the Department to take the lead and coordinate with the People's Committees of the communes to urgently address and reinforce dikes at vulnerable locations that do not ensure flood protection, in order to protect rice production areas in the Dong Thap Muoi region (23 dike lines, with a length of over 105km).
